A Trip to JeruzalemIf you’d like to experience the famous Jeruzalem wine region from a different, quieter perspective, we highly recommend this loop. In the eastern Slovenske Gorice, the route winds through secluded vineyards, past old winemakers’ houses, to the small village of Miklavž pri Ormožu with its St. Nicholas Church. After a short climb through the woods, you can choose to either take the quick route back to Jeruzalem, past the Old Chestnut Tree, or extend the loop via Svetinje (see Tour 38). In any case, the Slovenian wine country shows itself at its best: with its scenery, cuisine, and zest for life.

From Miklavž pri Ormožu to CerovecFine wines from the hill of the Teutonic OrderThe small village of Jeruzalem, with its early Baroque Church of St. Mary from the 17th and an old wine castle sits picturesquely on a hill overlooking gently rolling vineyards. It was founded in the early 13th century by Crusaders returning from Jerusalem (Palestine). Lovers of good white wine will eventually discover Jeruzalem, for on the sunny hillsides, fine grape varieties ripen into some of Slovenia’s best white wines. The sun-kissed grapes give the wine a light, fruity sweetness—a delicate nectars that tastes especially good under the cozy arbors of a winegrower’s farmstead. Among the vines, the “klopotec”—a windmill that serves as a scarecrow—clatters everywhere. It is set up on August 15 and taken down no later than St. Martin’s Day, the patron saint’s feast day of the winemakers. We hike across gentle hilltops with terraced vineyards and enjoy a magnificent view of the idyllic hilly landscape.

A Leisurely Hike in the Heart of Slovenia’s Wine CountryThe small village of Jeruzalem, with its Baroque Church of St. Mary visible from afar, welcomes visitors with a magnificent panorama and delightful cuisine. The terraced vineyards, in particular, are a true feast for the eyes. Jeruzalem got its evocative name from the Crusaders who returned from the Holy Land in the 13th century, settled here, and took up viticulture. This leisurely walk takes you past numerous vineyards and wineries. Well worth seeing are the small church village of Svetinje, visible from Jeruzalem, and the many places to stop for refreshments on the way back. One of the region’s most important white wines is Šipon, an ancient grape variety originating in Hungary. The season in Jeruzalem and the surrounding area traditionally ends with the feast of St. Martin, the patron saint of wine, on November 11. Here’s to an unforgettable time in the heart of Slovenia’s wine country: Na zdravje!

Vineyards, Border Crossings, and Historic SitesIn Velika Nedelja (Great Sunday), the history of the monarchy is palpable. In addition to the Church of the Holy Trinity and the castle with its imposing structure, the other buildings in the hamlet also bear witness to a past that is very closely linked to the Teutonic Order. The Kogl Winery, located above the village, is considered the oldest surviving winery in Štajerska and has been documented since 1542. The hike continues over the hill near Hajndl and down to Ormož (Friedau), a small town on the Drau River with a long tradition of winemaking. Worth seeing are the castle with its farmstead and park, as well as the small town center. Across from the train station, a bridge spans the Drava River toward Croatia: the view of the Ormož Lagoon—a reservoir that has become a nature reserve—is charming and well worth a detour.
