A route with a premium award: 5 ruins, 2 waterfalls, 4 viewpoints, 5 monuments and secluded romantic paths. What more could you expect from a hike? Adventure guaranteed. There is one downside: It requires good fitness and mental strength for this impressive, historical hike. Monuments along our way invite for a short pause. Adventurous ascents to the castle and the last very steep descent into the valley demand surefootedness, confidence on your feet, and good coordination from hikers. The ruin Château du Hohenstein, already carved in the 13th century, awaits us with a magnificent view over the Vosges and the Upper Rhine Graben. The impressive waterfall "Cascade du Nideck" (Nideck Waterfall), located at 534 meters and south of the Nideck castle ruins, falls down from a wall made of volcanic rock. The 25 meter high waterfall lies nestled within perfectly preserved nature. The path to the castle becomes athletic and demanding, winding up in switchbacks and natural stairs to "Château du Nideck" (Castle Lower and Upper Nideck). The two fairy-tale ruins of this castle (on a 534 meter volcanic rock cliff) are an eldorado for hikers following the Brothers Grimm paths. The forester's house "Maison Forestière du Nideck" is the starting point for further interesting excursions. It leads us past the inconspicuous Luttenbach Lake through the wild valley of the eponymous stream. Petit Ringelberg (small Ringelberg), a small summit with a barely recognizable castle complex (Castle Klein-Ringelstein), lies on our way back; it must be crossed on the way to our last ruin Castle Groß-Ringelstein from the 12th century. Oberhaslach awaits us back at our starting point.
