Your route, to the end of the Camino, is not extremely complicated, the average of its stages is around 24-25 km/day, something very normal on the Jacobean route. If we take a look at its profile in search of big slopes, the most notable is the climb to O Cebreiro, a classic. This climb is somewhat complicated, so much so that, hundreds of years ago in winter times and due to its snowfalls, there was a need to avoid this climb. That is why one of the main routes of the Camino called Winter Route (Camino de Invierno) emerged, which diverted south of Galicia and thus avoided the mentioned climb. Nowadays, even in winter, it is not complicated to make that climb due to all the equipment available and even a much better physical preparation by the pilgrims who make the Camino.

Another incredibly scenic stage that’s also quite challenging on the descents. At times we make only slow progress, but this allows us to better enjoy the tranquility of nature. In bad weather, you should think twice before taking each step on the descent. As we climb the final few meters, we also reach the highest point of the Camino.> After Foncebadón 01, even the remaining few meters of elevation gain are no longer a problem. When the weather permits, the views are excellent, and via a few winding paths we soon reach the Cruz de Ferro 02, with its large, inviting rest area and small abbey. Continuing along varied trails, we arrive at Manjarin 03, nestled amid the mountains, from where we have excellent panoramic views. Here you’ll find a small hostel operating on a donation basis with a place to eat. Be careful, though—it’s said not to agree with everyone’s stomach… From there, the trail generally heads uphill again along winding, muddy, and rocky paths. It’s still quite a distance to the next village, El Acebo, and just as we reach the highest point and start heading downhill, the trails become steep in places, extremely rocky, and strewn with scree. Sure-footedness is essential here! In some sections, the trails can also be heavily overgrown with shrubs and bushes and severely eroded by rain—in short, a truly varied and adventurous route. The last kilometer before Acebo is once again strenuous, as it’s steep, rocky, and littered with many trip hazards. Once we’ve made it past that, however, El Acebo de San Miguel 04 is all the more worth seeing. At the last house, the trail turns into a path that could be very muddy, which would lead us to a cell tower, but we turn left before reaching it to hike down a very steep but fairly solid slope. The rest of the trails to the next small village are sometimes better, sometimes very bad, and occasionally steep. Even past Riego de Ambrós 05, the rest of the route to the next town remains very challenging. It has all the usual obstacles, so caution is advised here as well! Partly along steep slopes and deep valleys, the trails to Molinseca 06 are very uneven. There, however, we can finally relax in a picturesque little town. Leaving the town center, we then stick to the left sidewalk next to the road for the next 2 km. We now leave the scree and downhill sections behind us. Walking slightly uphill, we reach a suburb of Ponferrada, but immediately take a detour to the left along the vineyards to reach Campo 07. It’s an unremarkable village that we pass through quickly, then take a wide detour. This brings us to Ponferrada from the southeast, where we get a good view of the city’s building facades. Signposts are scarce but are present at all key points. Crossing the bridge over the Río Biezos, we continue to the left and follow the arrows into the city center, where our stage ends at the tourist information office in Ponferrada 08, just to the right of the castle.

Camino frances.  St Jean to Roncesvalles via Orisson with less steep descent alternative via chapel.  Camino Duro from Villafranca (well worth the extra effort!).  Don't just think about it; DO IT !! A fantastic break from pointless life in the UK and wasting your life staring at computers all day.  Ideally continue to Finisterre and/or Muxia.
