A Hike in the Linzgau RegionThe trail from Meßkirch to Pfullendorf first leads through a large forest to Kloster Wald, the first Cistercian monastery founded in Upper Swabia. For 600 years, the daughters of the Swabian nobility were cared for here. From there, the trail continues to the old imperial city of Pfullendorf.

The princely landscape parkThe Hohenzollerische Pilgrims' Way leads from Rottenburg to Überlingen, our hike follows parts of the fifth and sixth stages. It starts in Sigmaringen, the residence city of the princes of Hohenzollern, and leads to Meßkirch. On the way lies the princely park of the former monastery in Inzigkofen, a landscape garden from the Romantic period. It was laid out in the early 19th century under Princess Amalie Zephyrine. An inscription in large iron letters on the Amalienfelsen, which rises 28.6 m above the water level of the Danube, commemorates this extraordinary woman, whose life story is depicted by Gabriele Loges in the novel "Paris, Sigmaringen or the Freedom of Amalie Zephyrine von Hohenzollern." The park lies on both sides of the Danube and incorporates the rocky steep slope that marks the exit of the Danube breakthrough into the garden architecture. The contrast between rugged rocks, steep slopes, and narrow gorges on the one hand and gentle riverbank meadows and the meandering Danube on the other gives it its special character.

Meßkirch, as the city promotes itself, is located in the Baden ingenuity corner. Not only was the philosopher Martin Heidegger born and raised here, but the composer Conradin Kreutzer also comes from here. Painters, sculptors, and a powerful preacher of the Baroque, Abraham a Santa Clara, also originate from Meßkirch or the surrounding area. They are all honored in the museum and the art gallery in the castle.

In the Footsteps of Heidegger South of MeßkirchMeßkirch is a small country town with a great past in western Upper Swabia. In the residence city of the Counts of Zimmern, the first four-winged Renaissance castle north of the Alps was built in the mid-16th century; its builder is better known as the author of the Zimmer's Chronicle. Under the Princes of Fürstenberg, however, the residence was moved to Donaueschingen. Since several significant personalities were born around Meßkirch, the area is called the Baden Genius Corner. Known beyond the region are: Arnold Stadler (*1954, writer), Abraham a Santa Clara (1644–1709, Viennese court preacher and writer), Conradin Kreutzer (1780–1849, conductor and composer), and Martin Heidegger (1889–1980, philosopher). Despite his unclear relationship with National Socialism, Heidegger is considered one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century. His brother Fritz reportedly said: "Martin couldn't be used for anything clever, so he just became a philosopher."In the last decades of the 20th century, Meßkirch experienced economic decline. Meanwhile, thanks to an active administration, new companies have settled, and investments have been made in tourism. You can see in the city that it is on the rise again.
