The 10 most beautiful hikes in Marne
Hikes and walks in the Marne
The Marne is located in the Grand Est region, having been part of the Champagne-Ardenne region until 2016. It borders the departments of Ardennes (to the north), Meuse (to the east), Haute-Marne (to the southeast), Aube (to the south), Seine-et-Marne (to the southwest), and Aisne (to the west).
The Marne department takes its name from the Marne river which runs through it, from the southeast to the west.
Geographically, the Marne is divided into three main parts. In the center of the department lies the Champagne plain or chalky Champagne, mainly covered with cereal fields. The west of the Marne is occupied by the Champagne vineyard and the hills of the Côte champenoise and the Montagne de Reims, where the department's highest point, Mont Sinaï, is located at 286 m altitude. To the east, the landscape consists of low hills, especially in the Argonne and Perthois regions.
The climate of the Marne has been measured since the Reims-Courcy station, located at 91 meters altitude. The department lies east of the Paris basin, its climate is a degraded oceanic one, under the influence of the continental climate, explaining its cool winters, mild summers, and fairly frequent but often light rainfall (51 mm per month on average) spread throughout the year.
Many routes await you to wear out your walking shoes on chalky or forest trails or to stroll in the heart of Champagne! The green banks of waterways, the vastness of forests, the subtle undulations of the crops, and the vineyard dotted with characterful villages, this is the face that Marne offers you...
There is something for everyone. More than 100 loops of PR trails maintained and marked by the departmental hiking committee will delight sports enthusiasts; other trails marked by the municipalities allow you to discover another side of the heritage and for the curious, more than 75 thematic walks for young and old will teach you even more about our history and culture.
