Through Light Woodlands and Along Dreamy LakesThe 3000-inhabitant town of Lychen is the western gateway to the Uckermark region. The town is surrounded on all sides by seven lakes, some stretching lengthwise, others round in all directions — this is often referred to as the "Lychen Lake Spider." Since 2010, Lychen has carried the official additional designation "Rafting Town," as rafting was a main source of income for the residents for centuries. The six-meter-high former city wall remains only in small sections, and of the three gate towers, two survive as remnants. The Tuberculosis Sanatorium built in 1902 in the Lychen district of Hohenlychen was widely known. In 1940, it was converted into a Waffen-SS hospital and in the last months of the war, Heinrich Himmler, the Reichsführer-SS and commander-in-chief of Army Group Vistula, resided here with his staff. The architecturally impressive complex was used as a hospital for the Soviet army from 1945 until 1993 and is currently being converted into upscale holiday apartments. Himmelpfort, with its monastery ruins, is picturesquely located on the western edge of Lake Moderfitz and is a popular excursion destination year-round. Last but not least, Lychen is of cultural-historical significance: in 1879, thumbtacks were invented here.

It is said that Lychen lies amidst seven lakes. This hike always follows the shores of at least four of these lakes - Nesselpfuhl, Wurlsee, Stadtsee, and Oberpfuhlsee. With small detours, you can even get to know two more lakes - Great Lychensee and Alt-Plachter Graben.

A stream of significant faunistic and cultural-historical importanceSoutheast of Lychen lies the elongated Zenssee. It is counted among the so-called Lychen lake cross (or lake spider). It is up to 29 m deep, 3 km long, and about 400 m wide. To the east lies the pine forest area of Hohe Heide. The northern part of the Hohe Heide is traversed by the Küstrinchenbach (also called Küstriner Bach), which is heavily used as a paddling waterway because it connects the Feldberg lakes with the Lychen lakes. This 11 km long watercourse is very shallow and only about 50 cm deep. Between the village of Küstrinchen and its mouth at the Oberpfuhlsee near Lychen, the stream drops almost 10 m over 7 km, which is why it was used for timber rafting in earlier centuries. Four weirs were built for this purpose. Due to the special fauna of the Küstrinchenbach (including the brook lamprey and the little freshwater pearl mussel), special navigation regulations apply – for hikers, the path along the stream is one of the most impressive routes in the Uckermark.

Forecast for Lychen

10-day forecast
Lychen's geographical location makes it an ideal starting point for hikes. The town lies on the edge of the Uckermark Lakes Nature Park and borders the Lower Oder Valley National Park. These natural reserves provide an impressive backdrop with rich flora and fauna.

One of the most beautiful hiking routes in Lychen leads along the Great Lychen Lake. This lake is not only the largest in the region, but also one of the cleanest bodies of water in Germany. The trail around the lake stretches for about 15 kilometres and offers breathtaking views of the sparkling water as well as the surrounding green hills.

The "Fairytale Hiking Trail" is particularly suitable for families with children. This short route leads through a mystical forest full of fairytale sculptures and tells stories from times gone by. Children can explore nature in a playful way here and let their imagination run wild at the same time.

Another highlight for nature lovers is the "Heidetour", which leads through the nearby heath area. Here you can admire the flowering heath in late summer or wander through the golden-coloured forest in autumn. This hike is particularly impressive and offers a unique atmosphere.

The best seasons for hiking in Lychen are spring and autumn, when the temperatures are pleasantly mild and nature shows its most magnificent colours. In summer it can get a bit hot, but you can still enjoy beautiful walks along the lakes or in the shade of the forest.

All in all, Lychen offers a variety of hiking options for every taste. Whether you want to cover long distances or prefer to explore short circular routes, everyone will find a suitable route here. The varied landscape with its lakes, forests and heathland makes every hike an unforgettable experience.

So lace up your hiking boots and set off on a voyage of discovery through the beautiful nature around Lychen!
