Discover legends and more on the Listening Tour Around the Goldberg, which consists of hard-to-erode Ries ejecta, mainly Malm limestone, thrown here to the southern edge of the Swabian Jura by the impact event, legends vary in different versions. During the Thirty Years' War, for example, wealthy people from the area are said to have buried chests and jugs of gold here, some of which still lie inside the mountain – hence the name "Goldberg" (Gold Mountain). At the site of today's castle mound, there is said to have once been a castle that sank into the mountain because its inhabitants were very evil people. Since then, their ghosts are said to haunt the place. Perhaps it is also the Goldberg little man, who is supposed to cause mischief on the Goldberg and scare people. No wonder, then, that in earlier times the Goldberg was avoided!

You can use your smartphone to guide you along this short loop trail: Information about the audio tour “Legends of the Goldberg” is posted on a sign behind Goldbergalm 1. More information is available online at www.lauschtour.de. Our trail leads into the forest behind the Goldbergalm and climbs gently. At Audio Point 3, we turn left and arrive at the spot where Goldburg 2 is said to have stood. The moat surrounding the castle ruins, which measure approximately 30 x 50 meters, is clearly visible. We head back to Audio Point 3 of the audio tour and continue to the left. At the intersection, we follow the wide path as indicated by the audio tour. From the edge of the forest, there’s a sweeping view of the Danube Valley. On a clear day, we can see the decommissioned Gundremmingen nuclear power plant. Passing a picnic table, we reach the Jubilee Cross 3 with a lounger and benches—a lovely place to rest. Continuing downhill, we come to a forest road and hike along it to the right. Soon we arrive at Forest Chapel 4. We turn right along the edge of the forest and then left into the woods. Passing Listening Point 8 of the audio tour, we reach the wide Forstdirektor-Mayr-Weg trail—we hike up it to the right. We now follow the signs for “Lauschtour Rückweg” and the corresponding trail markers through a beautiful mixed deciduous forest until we reach the Goldberg 5 and thus the highest point of the loop. Just a few more meters to the left and we arrive at the intersection we saw on the way there. We then head back along the same route to the Goldbergalm 1. After the hike, Unterliezheim is a great place to visit, featuring the Rococo Church of St. Leonhard, which belongs to the former Benedictine convent. Next door is an inn. From there, you can access several well-known hiking trails, including the Schwäbischer Albverein’s Main Hiking Trail 2 (Albrandweg) and the 29-km-long Grenzweg. A detour into Württemberg to Katzenstein Castle is also worthwhile—see page xxx.
