From the Säumermoor to Alpine-style farmhousesThe valley of the upper Vltava River, before it is dammed to form Lake Lipno, is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Bohemian Forest. The section between Lenora and Volary is particularly charming; while the Vltava Valley here is certainly not as wide or as dominant a feature of the landscape as it is further downstream, it is home to the Soumarský rašeliniště (muleteer’s bog). It takes its name from the packhorsemen of the Golden Trail (eastern route), who crossed the Vltava here at the Packhorsemen’s Bridge (Soumarský most). The 85-hectare bog, which formed in a dead arm of the Vltava, is accessible almost entirely via a boardwalk. Last but not least, the towns of Lenora and Volary also have plenty to offer: Lenora is an old glassmaking village, and in Volary in particular, old farmhouses in the Alpine style have been preserved. Cattle breeders from Styria and Tyrol (later often called “Wallerers”) settled here in the first half of the 16th century.
