Oberhalb von Wickensen am Homburgsweg startet die Wanderung direkt am Waldrand des Homburgwaldes. Es führt von dort ein breiter Wirtschaftsweg bis hoch zum Waldpädagogikzentrum Weserbergland. Da dieser Weg nicht so schön ist wie ein Naturpfad durch den dichten Wald, habe ich den breiten Wirtschaftspfad nach 400 Metern schon wieder verlassen, um auf einem alten Waldpfad Richtung Bolzplatz am Waldpädagogikzentrum zu wandern.
Dieser alte Pfad ist sehr spannend aber auch schon stellenweise zugewachsen, so dass es mit fortschreitenden Frühling und Sommer immer schwieriger werden könnte, den Weg zu beschreiten.
Am Bolzplatz unterhalb des Waldpädagogikzentrums verläßt man schließlich den Wald wieder und geht bis zum Waldpädagogikzentrum die letzten Meter wieder auf der breiten Zuwegung.
Das herrliche Waldpädagogikzentrum bietet viele tolle Sitzgelegenheiten zum Verweilen, bevor es den letzten steilen Anstieg hoch zur Burgruine Homburg auf dem großen Homburg (403 Meter üNN) geht.
(das Waldpädagogikzentrum Weserbergland wird von den Nds. Landesforsten betrieben und bietet bis zu 60 Personen Platz. Deswegen wird es oft von Schulen und Kindergärten genutzt)
Die letzten Höhenmeter zur Burgruine werden auf einem schmalen Pfad zurückgelegt, der sich den großen Homburg empor schlängelt.
Schon bald kann man die mächtige östlich gelegene Außenmauer erkennen, bevor der Weg entlang herrlicher alter Rotbuchen schließlich in die Vorburg mit ehemaligen Brunnen der Burgruine Homburg führt.
Ein weiteres Portal führt den Besucher schließlich in die Hauptburg mit dem markanten Hauptturm und einem kleinen Kellergewölbe.
Bis 2009 war die Homburg beliebtes Ausflugsziel der Region. Mittlerweile ist das hölzerne Aussichtsplateau auf dem Hauptturm morsch und einsturzgefährdet, so dass der Turm nicht mehr begehbar ist. Auch die mächtige Außenmauer musste mittlerweile gestützt und gesichert werden, um einen Einsturz zu verhindern.
Der Förderverein Homburgruine hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die Homburgruine wieder begehbar zu machen, um die Region mit diesem herrlichen Ausflugsziel wieder aufzuwerten.
