The cultural route “Pasture of Gjallica” (stane refered to also as shepherds’ huts) is a mountain route that honors the traditional practice of sheep migration (transhumance) carried out by the residents at the foot of Gjallica Mountain (2,489 m) in Kukes.
These routes have been used since ancient times and are documented on Italian topographical maps from the early 20th century.
Every year, at the beginning of spring, families from the villages at the base of Gjallica organize to move their herds of small animals to the rich pastures in the mountain’s upper regions. The meadows and pastures are divided among the villages, reflected in names like Pastures (shepherds’ huts) of Bicaj, and others. This journey, involving caravans of people, pack animals, dogs, and flock of sheep and goats, could take up to 2-3 days, as nearly all family members participated, except for a few tasked with guarding the homes.
Until the beginning of autumn, the residents used to stay in these high mountains (around 2,000 meters above sea level), where they engaged in activities such as breeding livestock, extracting, processing, and storing milk and its many by-products, as well as cultivating the limited land surrounding their stables and gathering wild fruits and aromatic medicinal plants.
Following this annual tradition, the trail of “Pastures of Gjallica” initiates at 300 meters above the sea level in the village of Shtiqen and rises to 2,200 meters, passing through a series of temporary settlements rich with legends passed down through generations. Along the trail, these settlements serve as stops, ensuring food availability, water, and rest. Moreover, given the long distances covered on foot, it is advisable to set up camp at some of these stops to spend the night. During your hike, you can also learn about the legends associated with the area, such as those of Shpella me Pesë Gishta (Cave with Five Fingers) and the Shkalla e Keqe.
