The Grabenlandtrail is an approximately 130 km long hiking route through the Styrian Grabenland southeast of Graz to Mureck. It mainly consists of an eastern and a western route and can be hiked in both directions. Technically, it poses no special challenges. The difficulties may rather lie in logistics: accommodation and getting to various starting points. The section West 6 (so named by me) leads from Wolfsberg via Glojach to Kirchbach.

Difficulties may rather lie in the logistics: accommodation and arrival at different starting points. The East 3 section (as I named it) leads from St. Stefan im Rosental via Jagerberg to Mettersdorfberg-Oberrosenberg or Mettersdorf.

Pilgrimage can mean a connection to religion for us, or simply a relaxed walk in search of inner peace. Either way, we will savour the quiet moments along the path to Mariazell.  This time, our route is part of long-distance trail 06 and joins the main Mariazell Pilgrimage Route near Graz, which leads from Soboth via Graz and the Almenland Nature Park all the way to the legendary basilica. We start in Mureck.Perhaps, however, our journey began earlier in Maria Bistrica, already carrying us—rich with impressions—across Slovenia and Croatia.

View over the rim of the chaliceAt 423 m above sea level, you stand on the viewing balcony of the Weinwarte above St. Peter. From below, the wooden tower looks either like the stem of a rather large wine glass or like a slightly smaller champagne flute. The lookout has been here since 2004, and not without reason: the 360-degree panorama is truly fabulous! The rest of the hiking tour offers less pomp, which is very accommodating for hikers seeking peace and quiet.
