The Quiet South of HiddenseeWhile the lighthouse on the Dornbusch is crowded on beautiful summer days, the Süder lighthouse itself remains peaceful even during the high season. Of course, you shouldn't expect a similarly impressive panorama here, as the south is simply too flat. Nevertheless, the hike is beautiful!

This beautiful hike connects Hiddensee’s three largest villages and introduces us to the island’s diverse scenic charms. We hike through species-rich salt marshes with a beautiful view of the Bodden, and also explore the Baltic Sea beach at Kloster and the secluded dune heath. In Kloster, we’ll pass by the island church and the Hauptmann Museum.▶ From the harbor in Neuendorf 01, we’ll follow the cobblestone street through the village and out of it. After a while, we’ll pass the Heiderose Inn 02, which invites us to take our first break. Just 300 m past the restaurant, the route veers right onto a somewhat overgrown paved path. At the shore of the Bodden, we then turn left onto a meadow path with a view of the nearby, uninhabited, 37-hectare Fährinsel, which today serves as an important breeding ground for numerous bird species. The path later takes us past a small lake and on to a dike path. We walk straight through Vitte 03, the largest town on the island. The name is derived from the term “Vitten,” which in the Middle Ages referred to herring fishing and trading posts. After leaving town, the tour leads through typical salt marshes teeming with birds. Beautiful views of the Vitter Bodden now accompany us all the way to the picturesque harbor of Kloster 04, which owes its name to a Cistercian monastery founded in the 13th century. Here, we head toward the stately Hotel Hitthim and follow the small road to the right of it, slightly uphill. After 200 m, the route turns left onto Kirchweg at a large intersection—where a centrally placed red buoy catches the eye. In quick succession, we now pass the Inselkirche (a cemetery containing the graves of Gerhart Hauptmann and Gret Palucca), the Hauptmann House, and the local history museum. At the latter, we take the path leading to the Baltic Sea beach 05.

About new land on the "Seahorse Island"In the northeast of Hiddensee, two narrow sand spits form the head of a seahorse. While the Neubessin is designated as a core zone of the Vorpommerische Boddenlandschaft National Park and closed to visitors, the Altbessin is open to hikers. The short detour to the cliff at Enddorn is very appealing.
