The story of the Feldbahn (feld – field; bahn – railroad) dates back to World War I. After the fall of Gorica and the retreat of the Austro-Hungarian army to the left bank of the Soča River in August 1916, this section of the Soča Front required additional supply lines through the Trnovo Forest. Due to the overload on the existing rail lines and cable cars, construction began in September 1916 on the first horse-drawn narrow-gauge railway, which ran from Logatec toward Zadlog, where the cable car system began. At the same time, a branch line toward Idrija was built to supply the mining town. The steep descent into the Idrijca Valley was overcome by a funicular near Divje Lake. Due to the limited load-carrying capacity of horse-drawn trains, construction of an additional motorized narrow-gauge railway on this route began before the end of 1916. The most challenging part was the descent into the Idrijca Valley, where several engineering structures had to be built to bridge the 300-meter elevation difference and navigate the steep terrain. Both narrow-gauge railroads remained in operation until the breakthrough on the Soča Front on October 24, 1917.

It is a long gravel road to the top, in a nice forest with enough shade during the hot Slovenian summer. The top of Javornik has nice views, to whats to come on the via alpina. Markings are good, the trail is quite easy to follow (just go up while staying on the gravel road, until you cannot anymore). The way down isnt that nice, lots of loose rocks, however you get rewarded with a nice little town with an open supermarket (till 19:00 on a weekday mid June '26).
