Hikes in Houffalize

The beautiful and varied route actually consists of two separate hikes that can be easily combined.

A beautiful and varied but also strenuous hike on well-marked paths and trails through a distinctly rugged landscape.

Over the rocks of Hérou, with splendid views of the river, the hike follows the course of the Ourthe and leads back to the starting point on narrow forest paths.

This tour in the Houffalize region impresses again with great, original paths, views over the heights and the Ourthe valleys, a lot of variety, and absolute tranquility in this truly dreamy landscape. The portion of NON-paths is actually limited to just a few hundred meters. For me, this is therefore one of the most beautiful mid-mountain hikes I have done so far.  The tour starts spectacularly with a short ridge section, offering many views over the Ourthe.  Below Engreux, it continues on a fishing path that then leads to a trail requiring some scrambling but especially sure-footedness.  It then goes along the Voyai stream back into the Ourthe valley.  Afterwards, there are long, original, beautiful paths that meander along the Ourthe and repeatedly offer wide views.  I hope the pictures can somehow reflect my incredibly great experiences today.  As a camping spot, I recommend the new campsite at the exit of Houffalize. It is located directly on the Ourthe, and the town center is only about 1 km away. This tour impresses with great, original paths, views of the heights, a lot of variety, and absolute tranquility in a truly dreamlike landscape. For me, therefore, without deductions one of the top tours along the Ourthe. The path initially runs along an angler's path directly along the Ourthe, really absolutely original and hardly frequented, before the first ascent with views into the Ardennes. Afterwards, it repeatedly goes back to the streams and over forest paths and trails to the heights.  A definite highlight is still the final section, which leads back down into the valley over some rocky sections. The first section then led me back to the path over a fairly steep and slippery slope. Circular hike to the Le Hérou rock, through the Ourthe valley and to the Celtic fortifications of Le Cheslé

The section NOT on trails is actually limited to just a few hundred meters. For me, this makes it one of the most beautiful low-mountain hikes I’ve ever taken.

Hello, Well, what can I say...... this is currently 2022 my absolute favorite in the nearby area of our home. 90% trail portions, magnificent views, climbing parts... and much more. A varied hike along the idyllic Nisramont reservoir, through forests and always close to the river, with beautiful views and nature trails.

The tour number 3 in the Houffalize region starts in Mont on the heights above the Ourthe valleys. The way down leads along streams that eventually flow into one of the branches of the Ourthe and here again mostly on great riverside paths. The feeder paths near Wibrin and Mont briefly also run over forest roads or road sections, but offer great views. In Achouffe, a stop at the local brewery or the souvenir shop is recommended. Overall, a great tour with a good dose of variety. The tour starts in Mont at the church with a short section through the village, before the first distant views can be admired on the heights at the edge of the village. Then it goes briefly through the broom, down the path, along the Ruisseau de Martin Moulin until it crosses the Ruisseau de Belle Meuse. Here, it goes steeply and rocky uphill and then downhill to the stream, which must be crossed here. Via the angler's path, you then reach one of the largest beaver pools I have ever seen in this region. Through the forest and a piece of road, you then reach at Wibrin the Vallee des Fees, which runs past the mill again along the Ruisseau de Martin Moulin, which in this section remains very natural and also includes smaller climbing sections. Behind Achouffe, it goes up again to Mont, partly over forest roads with another great distant view and finally over a really beautiful hedge path. As a camping station, I again recommend the new campsite at the exit of Houffalize. It is located directly on the Ourthe and it is only about 1 km to the center of the village. From there, you can reach the starting point in Mont by car in 10 minutes. This is now number 6 of the tours I planned along the Escapardenne Eislek Trail between Houffalize and La Roche.
