When a large river flows into a large lake, something special has to emerge. In the Rhine delta, alluvial forests, marshlands, and wet meadows unite to form a unique habitat.

The tour takes us through part of the Rheindelta nature reserve, one of the most important European breeding and resting areas for numerous bird species.

Third stage Lake Constance Peace Trail April 19, 2019 We hike the Lake Constance Peace Trail around the lake in 4 stages, 3 x 100 km + 40 km Überlingen - Friedrichshafen - Lindau Island - Bregenz - Rhine/ Altenrhein - Rorschach

The destination of this peaceful flatland loop along the near-natural Old Rhine and around the Gaißauer Ried is the Rheinholz recreational area. It is located in the northwest corner of the ornithologically significant Rhine Delta—the largest freshwater delta on our continent. Many endangered plant species can be found here.> From the parking lot at the Konsum in Höchst01, we take the route toward Rheineck until Seestraße branches off. There, we turn left onto Zehentstraße and, when we come to the Holderbaum cross street, make a right-left turn onto Frühlingsstraße. At the end of this street, we join a pedestrian and bike path. Along the wooded Old Rhine, with its small hidden ponds, pools, and picturesque backwaters, we take a leisurely hike around an oxbow lake toward Gaißau02. The quiet little road toward Rheinspitz continues to follow the old river course. Where the Rheinholz03 begins, follow the farm road to the right along a polder dike. After passing a boat harbor, a hiking trail leads along the entrance channel to a nearby lookout point on a small headland04, situated at the fan-shaped shoreline of the Rhine Delta with its pretty cove. Beyond the vast expanse of water, which, according to Alexandre Dumas, “looks like a piece of heaven framed by earth to serve as a mirror for God,” the Württemberg and Bavarian shores come into view, and to the east, the Pfänder mountain greets you. A fantastic meeting place of water and mountains on the dividing line between the Eastern and Western Alps! A wide horizon—the quintessential Lake Constance atmosphere!After a good long rest, the unusual vastness of this delta landscape along the rest of the dam path—which runs alongside a belt of reeds—almost evokes a touch of melancholy, even under a blue sky. At commercial fishing spot05, in front of a small harbor, we turn onto a narrow road. Across meadows and between cornfields, the route follows the eastern edge of the Gaißauer Ried toward the outermost Appenzell mountains. At a rest stop with a fountain, keep going straight ahead to return to Höchst01.
