Less than 20 km from downtown Linz, yet the second-highest market town in Upper Austria—that’s Hellmonsödt. It is said that during his imprisonment in the “Turmstübchen” (tower room) of Wildberg Castle, King Wenceslas of Bohemia once pondered one night how brightly the moon shone over the wilderness—at least, that is how local lore explains the origin of the town’s name. The people of Linz have always cherished the densely forested area around the village as a place for walks. However, it’s a special experience to hike from up there southward—and usually downhill—toward the state capital.
