A Contested Summit—A Place of RemembranceDuring World War I, the Hartmannswillerkopf was the scene of fierce fighting between German and French troops. Due to its strategic location overlooking the Upper Rhine Rift Valley, the mountain was of great military and symbolic importance. The first skirmishes began as early as late 1914 and escalated by 1916 into one of the bloodiest conflicts in the Vosges Mountains. Both sides constructed extensive trenches, shelters, and fortifications on the summit, remnants of which still stand today. The fighting was marked by artillery fire and extreme weather conditions. According to estimates, up to 30,000 soldiers lost their lives here. Due to the heavy casualties and difficult conditions, the mountain was later dubbed the “man-eater” and is now regarded as a symbol of the futility of war. In 1932, the large national memorial, featuring a crypt and a cemetery of honor, was dedicated. In 2017, France and Germany jointly opened the Historial, a modern museum that explores the history of the site. A visit to this museum is both educational and sobering, and highly recommended, as is the walk through the former battle positions.

Trotzdem sehr beeindruckend.
