The route goes along the Werbellin Lake from Eichhorst through Altenhof to the Kaiserbahnhof Joachimsthal. The hike leads through beautiful forest areas and along the Werbellin Canal and the lake of the same name. Mostly, you walk on regular forest paths. Only a rather short section after leaving Altenhof runs along a country road. Here the path is very poorly signposted and little to barely developed. In general, this is a very nice hike in the Schorfheide Chorin Biosphere Reserve.

Lake Werbellin, which covers an area of 7.82 km² and has a maximum depth of 55 m, is located in the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve in Brandenburg. The eight official swimming beaches are surrounded by a fascinating natural landscape featuring gentle, wooded hills. The documented history of Lake Werbellin begins in the 13th and 14th centuries, when the Margraves of Brandenburg, from the House of Ascania, had the Ascanian Tower (in the southwest bay)—which has since been reconstructed—built. This was followed by the “romantic” Prussian King Frederick William IV, who had the Hubertusstock hunting lodge built in 1847 (above the western shore). Even Theodor Fontane (1819–1898) wrote in his hiking guide through the Mark of Brandenburg: “The village of Altenhof (east shore) is a fairy-tale place.” With the opening of the railway line from Eberswalde via Britz to Joachimsthal in May 1898, tourist traffic to Lake Werbellin began. In October of the same year, Emperor Willem II also arrived by train and was greeted with cheers at the Kaiserbahnhof (starting and ending point) at Lake Werbellin. The presidents of the Weimar Republic (1918–1933), Eberhard and Hindenburg, had their summer residences at the Waldhof (on the west shore). In the 1970s, the GDR leadership had the Hubertusstock hunting lodge built to resemble the original; in 1981, Erich Honecker and Helmut Schmidt met there. Today, the lake is a popular destination for Berliners, bringing with it traffic chaos on summer weekends.
