Across the Plateau to the Highest Point of the VercorsThis two-day tour is incredibly varied in terms of landscapes. Starting from the Belvédère, which provides orientation boards not only about the peak names but also about the vultures reintroduced here, an impressive ridge walk characterizes the first part of the hike. It's worth occasionally leaving the path to walk directly along the ridge meadows. This means gaining a bit more altitude, but the views deep into the rugged cliffs are spectacular. Impressive vultures glide over the heads, sometimes very close, lifted higher into the air by the thermals; chamois play in the rock falls below, while the rolling hills of the Drôme stretch out to the horizon at your feet. From the Pas des Econdus, the terrain changes as you enter a steppe-like landscape full of bizarre karst formations, sinkholes, and weathered conifer trees. In ancient times, an old trade route passed here as the most direct connection between Grenoble and Die. The "Route du Vin" ran from Gresse over the Pas des Bachassons and through the Plaine de la Queyrie. The Romans especially left their marks here. You can still see the remains of their quarry, exploited between the 1st and 3rd centuries. Huge blocks were extracted to build structures in Dea Augusta, today’s Die, located 18 kilometers away – quite incredible!

Nature Reserve and Main RidgeThe main ridge in the east of the Vercors is one of the most exciting things the Bastion has to offer for nature lovers, especially further south, where the nature reserve of the "Hauts Plateaux du Vercors" begins. On the uninhabited high plateaus, old shepherd huts have been prepared for hikers, such as the Cabane de la Jasse du Play. From there, the ridge can be approached, crossed, or circled in various ways. You just have to bring your own comfort. The carrying effort is rewarded by silence, solitude, and the experience of nature.

Circling a Mountain MythKnown in history as the "Mont Inaccessible". Like a block broken off from the eastern edge of the plateau, now freely balanced on a pedestal, the once "Unclimbable" mountain appears. The rather unusual shape of this 2087-meter high table mountain, which is one of the seven wonders of the Dauphiné, inevitably draws attention from all directions. Perhaps it was the reputation of its unclimbability that prompted King Charles VIII during one of his journeys to order the conquest of Mont Aiguille. The year was 1492. Antoine de Ville, one of his officers, was dispatched with a team. To master the sheer rock walls, the clever captain resorted to aids: assault ladders, thanks to which the team reached the summit plateau. Thus, this act not only marked the birth of mountaineering but also inaugurated the first via ferrata in history. The date is easy to remember as it coincides with Christopher Columbus’s discovery of America.Today, international climbers flock to Mont Aiguille. Naturally, the normal route is heavily frequented, the same one where de Ville fought through the broad west flank. There was even debate about developing this path into a via ferrata, which caused outrage among locals who felt it would desecrate their "sacred" mountain. But hikers also want to enjoy the mountain myth, so the Tour du Mont Aiguille was created, where the famous rock obelisk can be circled. It is preferably approached counterclockwise since the north pillar of Mont Aiguille, visible beautifully between Trézanne and Col de Papavet, shines best in the morning sun.
