A moderately challenging hike that lets you lose track of time on secluded Hunsrück trails. A varied route leading to secluded hilltops and through idyllic stream valleys. At the “Gräfendhroner Wacken,” as well as at other vantage points, you’ll enjoy fantastic panoramic views of the Dhron Valley and across the forested Hunsrück highlands.

In 368/69 AD, Ausonius, a Roman scholar and rhetorician, traveled across the Hunsrück from Bingen to Trier in the entourage of Emperor Valentinian after an Alemannic campaign on the old Roman road. He wrote down his travel impressions in the work "Mosella", which is still the oldest travelogue of a German landscape.

The route, about 11km long and running through much forest on hillside paths, starts in Gräfendhron and first follows along the small river Dhron. Shortly before Bienenkopf, it crosses the forest to reach a hillside path, along which a Way of the Cross memorial chapel is reached shortly before Horath. The basis of the route is the Traumpfad Dhrontal-Wacken route, which has been slightly shortened.

The circular route starts in the small village of Gräfendrohn and is well signposted, partly quite steep, uphill to above Horath; that is the turning point and then descends into the Dhron valley, the stream is followed upstream to near the mill, where you can take a short break before walking along the edge of the forest and reaching Gräfendrohn again.

Mostly beautiful paths, sometimes rather difficult. The "normal" path is not recommended when wet. However, there is an easier detour for the dangerous ascents and descents, which we did not take.
