This historic hike leads from the medieval town of Laupen following the footsteps of Charles the Bold to Murten and further to the former capital of Roman Helvetia, Avenches.
From predominantly German-speaking Murten in the canton of Fribourg, the hike leads to the French-speaking canton of Vaud to Avenches. Place names like Crauxwald show that the language border here is not a sharp boundary, but rather a bilingual transition area.
Avenches is an important town in ancient Roma Empire. So here a tiny Roma Arena and open-air oprea house are preserved. Also the ancient city walls still can be found in the east of this small town. Take 2 steps by train to arrive in Murten. The brilliant small town is one of my favourate place in Switzerland. Enjoy Murtensee views in platforms inside and outside of the old city. Remarkable point is that you can be free to get up to the wall and defence towers of old city. In the hiking track, everything is free except for your train ticket.
