Don't miss one of the most beautiful views in the world! Certainly one of the most beautiful panoramas existing but also the discovery of a site rich in history and natural surroundings. A hiking route in the departmental natural park of the Grande Corniche, very nice, marked all along the trail, to be done on beautiful sunny days, ideal in winter and spring. The highlights are the proximity to Nice, exceptional panoramas all along the trail, and a very present Mediterranean flora.

Round trip along historic panoramic paths"Thus Spoke Zarathustra" was on Friedrich Nietzsche's mind as he climbed up the mountain path from the rocky coast to the medieval Èze Village. There, inspired by the dreamlike landscape, he wrote what is probably his most famous work around 140 years ago. It is easy to empathize with the philosopher and poet's enthusiasm for the panorama that unfolds along the path named after him. Admittedly, some details have changed somewhat, at least since a devastating fire destroyed the pine forest on the slope in 1986.In Èze-Village, high up on a hill, the tranquillity is not all that good: The crowds stream through the narrow streets, past the Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption to the ruins of Château d'Èze, where the botanical garden is located. But as soon as you turn your back on the scenery to climb the neighboring Mont Bastide, things become quieter again. From the eastern slope of the small mountain, the view of the hill with its characteristic church tower and the crumbling walls of the fortress is a delight. The next sublime moment follows on the rugged summit: the Maritime Alps, covered in snow in winter, shine to the north, while the moving surface of the Mediterranean Sea glistens to the south.

The picturesque setting of Èze has always captivated artists and writers. Walt Disney, for example, lived in Èze for a long time, and Friedrich Nietzsche completed the third part of his work *Thus Spoke Zarathustra…* there at the end of the 19th century. A trail about five kilometers long—quite steep but well-marked—was named after him; it connects Èze-Bord-de-Mer and Èze Village.▶ With the Èze-sur-Mer 01 train station behind us and our eyes on the mountains, we begin our tour by turning right along the coastal road. At the “Sentier Nietzsche” sign, we turn slightly to the left. After a short distance, we leave the seaside resort and head uphill, at times quite steeply over stairs, gravel, and rocks. The trail descends gently for a short stretch until we enter the Vallon du Duc 02 valley. Then the path winds steeply uphill again, in switchbacks and up stairs. Even experienced hikers will work up a sweat here. Passing a lookout point, we reach the luxury hotel Château de la Chèvre d’Or in Èze Village 03. It’s worth taking a detour through the village’s narrow streets. We turn right and reach the main road. There, we head left toward Nice and walk on the right side of the road across a bridge. After the viaduct, we turn right toward Mont Bastide onto a trail. The path climbs steeply again, over rocks and through the forest, until we reach Mont Bastide 04. From the summit, we can enjoy a magnificent view of the coast and Cap Ferrat. After a short distance, the trail leads us to a country road 05 near the Col d’Èze. We follow the signs on the same side of the road straight ahead toward Èze-sur-Mer. Passing a ruin, the yellow markings lead us downhill. Via a rocky path, we reach a country road, which we cross. At a signpost, we descend the slope via stairs. The path winds its way through rosemary bushes toward the coastal town. Passing a statue of the Virgin Mary and a few community gardens, we reach the first houses. This section of the trail is very well marked, and the signs guide us down stairways to the main road. There, we turn left. After a few meters, we arrive back at the Èze-sur-Mer 01 train station.

Small family hike, easy, ideal in winter or mid-season. Picnic without worries at the fort, toilets at the nature house (various exhibitions all year round). The hardest part will be parking at the start of Èze village, few spaces and paid every day (kudos to the town hall!!).

Great hike! We started at the train station and took the Nietzsche path up to Eze. Then got some epic views on top of the mountain. The rest of the path was downhill and there were a lot of loose rocks so it was quite difficult and exhausting for knees. But definitely recommend this direction and the hike in general.

Really nice hike. Maybe difficult when raining. Superb view from top. Do not forget hiking shoes and you should be comfortable with rocky trails. At the house of the nature friends you will find some explanations and toillettes.
