Roncesvalles/Orrega – Zubiri – A gentle descent

Today’s stage will generally take us downhill toward Zubiri. Here, we’ll mainly cross or run parallel to busy roads, following them only for short stretches through towns. The trails therefore lead us mostly through rustic-looking beech forests, though at times they also wind along beautiful dirt roads and past farmsteads. The final part of the stage, down to our destination, becomes more challenging once again, which can turn into a slippery adventure, especially in the right weather conditions.> On the right side of the road, signs for Roncesvalles/Orrega 01 lead us into a beautiful, old beech forest. The trail is in very good condition, and the signage at critical points is clear. As the forest thins out and opens up toward the first buildings, we know we’re just before Auritz 02. Here there’s a place to shop, a “tienda,” which means “small shop.” In reality, it’s a kind of corner store. It’s a lovely little village with houses, some of which were built around 1800 and are still very well maintained. As we continue along the Camino, we pass many more beautiful and far older villages and buildings. On the main road, we switch sides, walk along the park, and shortly afterward return to the main road. The arrows guide us reliably and direct us to turn rightat the Santander Bank 03in Auritz. Passing the ATM, we cross the river, walk straight ahead through the farm, follow the winding path uphill, and now cross farmland. We then pass through the gate and return to the forest. After a short climb, we come to a road in a clearing, which we follow straight ahead downhill. The trail leads directly to Aurizberri/Espinal 04. We walk through the village, turning right onto the main street, follow the road, and are soon directed to the left, from where we now hike alternately along idyllic field and forest paths.Eventually, we reach a road again, cross it, and continue on forest trails. After just a short while, we come to a set of downward-sloping stone steps, which unfortunately can become very slippery when wet, or when there is snow or fallen leaves. We come out onto the main road again and cross a ford using bollards or stepping stones. If the stream is too swollen, the road is a good alternative for crossing. Not far from there is Biskaretta-Gerendian 05, which has another small shop. Once we’ve passed through the little village, we follow a gravel road into the nearby grove, then turn right across the road and continue on gravel paths that quickly become muddy when wet and are full of puddles. The same applies to all subsequent paths leading to Zubiri. The next little village (Lintzoain) doesn’t offer much besides a water source, so we press on quickly and tackle the final kilometers. Once again, we walk through the forest on a long, rocky path. When we reach a T-junction 06, we can already hear the road. The yellow arrow is somewhat hidden, but we find it on our right. Passing power and cell towers, we soon come to the Erro rest area 07, which offers a small snack bar (closed in winter) and good views. Beyond that, the final 3 km or so to Zubiri are all downhill, unfortunately on rather rough trails. We pass through a gate directly onto farmland. Be careful if we encounter cows! It’s best to walk around them in a wide arc and avoid making eye contact; otherwise, they might get startled and run in the same direction as us. From there on, the terrain becomes very uneven, rocky, and sometimes slippery; in certain weather conditions, the entire path turns into a small stream. This section demands our utmost concentration and sure-footedness. Unfortunately, this makes the trail even longer, and there are additional steep and slippery sections on the last 600 m before our destination.
