All good things come in threes: up and down from pass to passToday we are spared from long ascents. Instead, the path takes us up and down steadily over three smaller passes, which, despite their relatively low altitude, offer us a good overview. When we reach the D918 above the Cabane du Litor, we have already left the Pyrénées-Atlantiques behind and may venture into a new department. Who knows what the High Pyrenees will bring...
Natural jewels on the way to CauteretsA mountain hut could not be more beautifully located: The Refuge d’Ilhéou above the lake of the same name captivates hikers from everywhere. The steep, forbidding rock faces around Lac d’Ilhéou form a strong contrast to the inviting, sunlit blue-green sparkling water of the lake. After the demanding ascent to Col d’Ilhéou, 2242 m, we have truly earned our break and the lovingly prepared omelette by the hut keeper tastes all the better. The spa town of Cauterets is a worthy conclusion to a truly extraordinary stage.

We did this hike in early spring, and the lakes were still frozen. A magnificent sight. A lot of snow on the path, but no problem completing the route.
The refuge is a bit simple but nice. The walk back from the refuge is a bit long and tiring after a long day's hike.
This beautiful is very popular, for several reasons: the path is easy to follow (good for dogs, kids, etc); views are excellent; there is a beautiful waterfall and a couple of lakes; it ends at a nice refuge, where you can buy (overly priced) crepes and beer. What's not to like?
We were lucky: in the morning we observed dozens of eagles taking off from the cliff side and using the Breese for lift. Later we saw the local shepherd using his two dogs to herd sheep that were 400 meters above them!
