This circular hike leads us to the Heuneburg near Hundersingen. The area with castle complex, burial mounds, and square fortification is today the best-researched Celtic princely seat. The open-air museum at the Heuneburg and the museum in the former Zehntstadel Hundersingen vividly depict the era.

This hike combines parts of the marked routes 10 + 11 and starts a little away from the busy Federsee area. Highlight of the route: the Blind Lake.
Heuneburg Shortly after passing through the gate arch, we stand on the grounds of Heuneburg. Panels and some reconstructed houses in the open-air museum on the castle plateau (usually open from early April to the end of October, Tuesday to Sunday as well as on holidays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) allow you to imagine the former splendor. © Claus-Günter Frank

Manhattan on the DanubeThis hike leads through fields, meadows, and forests in the Danube Valley. In this 3,000-year-old cultural landscape, the Heuneburg marks the beginning. A 3-hectare plateau, located 60 m above the Danube, was surrounded by a clay brick wall equipped with towers or bastions. Inside the wall ring stood rows of uniformly arranged huts, possibly quarters for traders and craftsmen – a unique structure north of the Alps. In the last 20 years, another densely populated area was discovered at the western foot of the Heuneburg. It is now suspected that this early Celtic prince's residence (6th century BC) is the city of Pyrene mentioned by the Greek historian Herodotus, making it the oldest written reference to a place in Germany. At its height, up to 10,000 people are believed to have lived here. Plan enough time for the open-air museum.

Nuns and DisciplesThe former Cistercian nunnery Heiligkreuztal, founded in 1227, with the St. Anna Minster is a highlight of the hike; the three-aisled basilica is one of the most beautiful monastery churches in Upper Swabia. A special highlight is the choir window with its colourful stained glass paintings, created around 1312. Famous is the medieval sculpture placed in the apse, showing Christ with his favourite disciple John. Wilflingen is the ancestral seat of the Schenken von Stauffenberg, an ancient Swabian noble family. The most famous member of this family is Claus Schenk Count von Stauffenberg, one of the assassins of July 20, 1944. From 1951 until his death in 1998, Ernst Jünger lived in the former forester's house opposite the castle; today a museum there commemorates the writer and his brother Friedrich Georg.

An archaeological circular trailThe Celts had no written language of their own and only knew oral tradition. Therefore, we still know little about them today. Due to extensive trade relationships, advanced agricultural methods and tools, since around 1000 BC more and more people in Europe show cultural, artistic, religious, and linguistic similarities. To what extent this Celtic culture spread through population growth or adoption from other Indo-European tribes and peoples is unclear. In the 5th century BC, a period of migration began: Celts moved to Italy, across the Balkans, to Greece and as far as Turkey. The Heuneburg and its surroundings formed an important Celtic center, which we will get to know on this circular hike. The center of this area lay on a plateau where today the Heuneburg open-air museum is located.
