Hikes in Echzell

The Upper German-Rhaetian Limes, which marked the border of the Roman Empire between the rivers Rhine and Danube over a length of 550 km.

​We explore the Berstadt Markwald on mostly wide trails, passing by hidden bodies of water such as the Georgen Pond and the Otto Pond.  The starting point of our tour is the small church in the Echzell district of Bisses 1, shaded by a Luther linden tree planted in 1883. We walk along Georgenstraße out of town and turn left onto the concrete path at house number 61. Rising slightly, this path soon turns into a meadow trail, which the route follows straight ahead. Only after about 800 m do we turn left toward the road. We walk carefully alongside the road for a short distance, pass under the highway, and immediately afterward keep to the right onto the paved path. After 350 m, the trail turns left at a large fork, leading away from the clearly audible A45.Soon we come to a larger forest road, the Teichclearing 2. Here, the route turns right. The well-defined path leads us through the dense greenery of the Berstädter Markwald, where several mighty oaks are particularly impressive. We cross several intersections straight ahead—soon climbing slightly again. On a hill, the tour eventually joins a bike path. A short while later, at the T-intersection with the forest road, the trail keeps to the right (black-and-yellow diamond, bike path signage). The black-and-yellow markings lead us along the Ludwigsweg to a major bike path intersection at a clearing.Here, the route turns right and follows the green triangle along Niddaerstraße 3. We enter a dense beech forest, hike downhill, and pass under the highway once more. A short while later, the Georgenteich 4, idyllically situated in the forest, invites us to take a break. In case of rain, a covered seating area here also offers shelter. A few steps further on, the loud croaking of frogs reveals the somewhat hidden Ottoteich.Soon the trail opens up into open fields, where the view stretches from the farms of Bisses all the way to the church in Echzell. We stay on the wide path for now and then soon take a meadow path on the right that leads us back to the Bisses church 1.
