From Matavun to ŠkofljeInto the Hellmouth of the Reka The Reka is a river full of secrets and wonders. It springs from the Snežnik massif, crosses half of Slovenia, carves its way from Škoflje through a romantic gorge to Škocjan, where it disappears into the karst to re-emerge 38 km further on as the Italian karst spring Timavo; after just 2 km it flows into the Adriatic. In Škocjan, it has created a unique cave system, the Škocjanske jame (= caves), which were declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 1986. On two tours, we can explore the mysterious underground world of the Reka: The classic route first crosses a large show cave with beautiful stalactites and then leads into a huge rock dome through which the Reka flows, passing a 50 m deep canyon, whirlpools, and waterfalls. With its spray and roar, it fills the cave like an inferno. Since 2011, there is a new route following the course of the Reka from the karst into the cave system. Here, the powerful work of water in caves and gorges, inside the mountain, and in the gigantic collapse dolines, Mala (Small) and Velika (Large) Dolina with a depth of 165 m, can be observed most impressively. Visitors reach the bottom of the dolines, where the Reka rests in a small lake to gather strength for the great inferno. Both tours end in the doline, which we leave by an inclined elevator. From the upper station, one can immediately continue the hike into the Reka gorge. But even above ground, the surroundings of Škocjan are impressive: The small village lies at the edge of the huge rock wall of the Mala Dolina, tiny compared to the massive crater. An informative and panoramic educational trail circles the entire doline area.

In the immediate vicinity are the world-famous Škocjan Caves, which are among the most beautiful in the world and have been declared a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO. On this completely flat stage you will walk through the karst world as well as through numerous mountain meadows and forests. Once innumerable pastures are today more and more overgrown. The influence of the sea (climate, plants) is still very strong.

From Matavun to Senozece with a detour up Mala Vremsica. Very nice walk, rich with butterflies ! The climb was steep but not long. Nice to take some height compared to previous day. We slept in a hotel in Senozece, nothing remarkable there except that we could pack in some bananas and cash.

From San Dorligo della Valle to Koca na Kokosi. Nice walk, just very warm and moist especially in the morning. We struggled to find some lunch and had to settle for bad gas station sandwiches which we found at the Slovenia/Italia border. A striking impression from day 2 (which we kept for the rest of our time in Slovenia) is the absence of marking for the Via Alpina. If you don't have the track in your phone, you will very hardly be able to follow any track at all. Appreciated goulash and blueberry cake at the refuge Koca na Kokosi, though they were not open to sleep. They told us it was ok to camp so we spent the night there, freedom camping. We did the part from Kokos to Matavun the next day. Less nice and interesting day of walking (not bad either), but Matavun was really pretty and we had time to visit the Skockjan caves which comes highly recommended. Stayed at the hotel Skrla where we were very well received. Note that my GPS gives over 15 km for both days, and though both days were not hard, they were not short either, especially if you carry a bit of weight. I really recommend having some spare time in Matavun so cutting the day in two was a good decision imo.
