Walk from the train station of De Panne (Adinkerke) to Bray Dunes and possibly extendable to Zuydcoote. We walk along the newly laid out path (April 2025) which follows the route of the former railroad line called "TRAVERT".Before crossing the border, we follow a stretch of grassy path that takes us along the banks of the "3 ponds".In France, a stretch of "Vélomaritime" before turning right through les Dunes du Perroquet" to reach Bray Dunes. After the lunch break, a short visit to Bray Dunes:The first villas on the embankment, the former station (now Tourism Office), the war memorial at the exit of the city center and a bit further on the corner of the embankment, possibly a view (at low tide) of the wreck of the sunken Devonia (WW2, May 1940).Afterwards, a detour through "La Dune Marchand".We end up at the "Hôpital Maritime" of Zuydcoote. Are you too tired? .... Between Bray Dunes and Zuydcoote, there are 2 more stops to return by DK Bus.The bus stop for the DK bus, which will take us back to Belgium free of charge, is located at the roundabout before the entrance to the Hôpital Maritime.

Loop through dunes and forest near De PanneAt the westernmost point of Belgium – literally "Westhoek" – a natural oasis surprises us with dunes, trees, beach, and sea. Several dune belts run parallel to the coastline with the central migrating dune. Around this dune, also called "Sahara," we encounter approximately 400 different plant species and three designated viewpoints across 350 hectares between the French border and De Panne. With some luck, we might encounter Scottish Highland cattle or Konik horses during the tour, which are used as landscape gardeners in this oldest nature reserve in Flanders. The circular hike takes us through the 55-hectare Calmeynbos before and after the dune loop, a dune forest planted at the beginning of the 20th century with around 25 different tree species.

Dunes and Beach Circuit to FranceLocated on the border, the dunes of Perroquet and Marchand present themselves as the western extension of Westhoek into France. Over several hundred hectares, dune chains spread out with their unique flora and fauna, interrupted by the popular holiday resort of the same name. On the circular hike through the dune areas of Perroquet and Marchand, we pass the site of the "Operation Dynamo" of the Second World War. According to Wikipedia, this was the "largest rescue operation in world history up to that point," during which around 340,000 British and French soldiers were evacuated in 1940 from the advancing German troops and shipped to Great Britain. Along the coast, bunkers occasionally serve as remnants of the Atlantic Wall, reminding us of this dark era.
