The "viewing balcony of the Aosta Valley"Thanks to the proximity to the Monte Rosa valleys and the Matterhorn – which lies precisely in the extension of its ridge – and the position advanced into the main valley, the Zerbion is considered the viewing mountain of the Aosta Valley par excellence. This fact is also reflected in the summit marker: While many summits in the region are decorated with crosses and figures of Mary, on Mont Zerbion stands an about ten-meter-high statue of the Madonna, visible from the entire lower Aosta Valley. Two of the three ridges, which gently descend into the valleys, can be easily accessed by hiking trails from the nearby high-altitude settlements, so that in midsummer, streams of tourists and whole school classes are often on their way to its summit. It is therefore worth setting off in the early morning hours to be a little earlier at the top than the crowds.

Primeval forest, Walser settlements and meadow ridges above Mons JovisHigh above the narrow section of the lower Aosta Valley, Montjovet (»Mons Jovis« = Mountain of Jupiter), the high valley of Champdepraz leads into the Emilius group and ends beneath the cliffs of the striking, tower-like Mont Avic, 3006 m. This area was declared the »Parco Naturale Mont Avic« a few years ago due to its completely untouched nature. It is probably no coincidence that the Walser, who often settled at important passes and strategically significant narrow valley points, had established some colonies here above Montjovet, which gave the valley the name »Gettaz des Allemands«. Today, only old place names like Viering, Mure, Boden, and Füsse recall this former settlement, as most villages are abandoned. Our path is a simple circular tour on the sunny side of the valley, including a crossing of Mont Barbeston, 2482 m.
