Artists and Cherries, Vineyards and Restaurants The Mont Ventoux in Provence, of course, cannot be compared to El Ventos, as the hill west of Céret is called on the IGN map. However, as a digestion walk after a Catalan meal, for example in the restaurant with the unusual name »Les Pieds dans le Plat«, Ventous is just perfect. From the path through fields and hedges, we repeatedly look at the pretty little town where, at the beginning of the 20th century, the modern artists Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Georges Braque lived and painted – indeed, from above the view resembles a cubist painting. At the highest point, where the official hiking trail simply passes by, grapes and cherries grow side by side. And the latter are well-known in France: the cherries from Céret are the first to appear on the market, even before the cherries from Provence.

A hike to the summit and across the border from the artists’ and cherry-growing village to the spa town Which name best describes this scenic mountain high above the Bas Vallespir? The Catalan name, which refers to rugged rock: Roc de Frausa. The French one, which emphasizes the border but could also just be a clerical error: Roc de France. Both names fit. What also fits: the view from above over the plains of Roussillon and Catalonia, with the easternmost foothills of the Pyrenees in between, cascading down toward the sea, and the trails through beech groves, juniper bushes, and—most beautiful on the descent to Amélie-les-Bains—through vast chestnut groves.

A Shady Low-Mountain Stage Following in the Footsteps of HistoryThe GR 10 is increasingly turning into a low-mountain hike, where the mountains are no longer as high and the climbs are no longer as long. Many mountain passes are hidden beneath trees, and it is mostly rocks that stand out. Nevertheless, the trails remain steep, which is why this stage should not be taken lightly. We can count ourselves lucky given the pleasantly shady forests that, together with the rocky border ridge around the Roc de Frausa, define the landscape. At the Coll de Saint Martí, 1,426 m, we return to the national border today for the first time in a long while. The Pyrenees’ historic past as a French-Spanish border range also becomes apparent at the stage’s destination, Las Illas. During World War II, the Hostal dels Trabucayres there served as a refuge for numerous refugees on the Chemin de la Liberté, protecting them from their persecutors.
