Stunning slate landscape along a secluded riverThe Rio Sever forms the border between Portugal and Spain—between the Alto Alentejo and the Spanish region of Extremadura—for nearly 50 km. In its final kilometers (before it flows into the Tagus), the Sever winds through a hard-to-reach slate landscape, creating a particularly charming river valley. At first glance, the valley appears deserted, and indeed, only a few hikers and sport fishermen find their way into this unspoiled wonderland. However, there are many traces of human activity dating back to the Middle Ages. Since the 10th century, the valley’s inhabitants have built watermills along the river, the remains of which can still be seen today.
