The Holy Mountain of the Catalans Le Canigou! The Olympus of Catalonia, the ruler of the eastern Pyrenees. A mighty mountain massif between the Conflent and the Vallespir, with wide-spreading ridges towering high above the valleys of the Têt and the Tech. Only 30 kilometers from the coast, it was long considered the highest peak of the Pyrenees. If measured by its relative height, this assumption is not far off: it rises about 2400 meters above Prades, which lies directly at its northern foot. The Greeks called it the "Fire Mountain" (pyrene), because ore has been mined on its slopes since prehistoric times. The first ascent was made by King Pedro III of Aragon (and II of Catalonia) in 1285 – alone, because his companions stayed behind in fear. Anyone wishing to stand alone at the summit today must have been lucky and chosen an unusual time: in summer, hundreds of people make a daily pilgrimage to Canigou.

Two mountain passes with little solitudeFrom Mantet, the Col de Mantet (1,760 m), located along a road, is quickly reached. After a descent through dry, lush vegetation, we reach the little village of Py. Here, it’s time once again to restock our supplies and gather strength for the upcoming stages. The next major town, Arles-sur-Tech, is still a long way off. The bustling Col de Jou (1,125 m) is followed by the beautiful, yet strenuous, climb to the Refuge de Mariailles (1,718 m). The refuge, which is now once again much more comfortable, rewards us with a breathtaking view of the sheer cliffs.

All about the Canigou MassifToday there is once again a true high mountain feeling. The exposed high-altitude trail that traverses the northern slopes of the Canigou Massif guarantees a magnificent view. In good visibility, we can also catch our first glimpse of the Mediterranean Sea lying on the horizon. This unleashes unexpected forces. Although the GR 10 offers a great hiking experience on this stage, the alternative route via Pic du Canigou is recommended in good weather: As the last truly high mountain, the 2784 m tall giant dominates the landscape. Even more impressive is the view of the Mediterranean Sea from the summit.
