On the Way in the Land of Traminer. A special sense of fulfilment accompanies us on this final stage of the Hiking Trail From Glacier to Wine. After completing 34 daily stages, today marks the last chapter of a journey that has led from the glaciers of the Dachstein to the vineyards of southeastern Steiermark. Fittingly, the route seems determined to reward all the effort invested along the way. The terrain is gentle, the distances manageable, and the landscape invites us to savour every remaining kilometre. Rather than presenting new challenges, this final stage offers time to reflect on the experiences, encounters, and landscapes that have shaped the journey. Our starting point, the wine-growing village of Klöch, is one of the most important wine centres in the Thermen- & Vulkanland region and is particularly renowned for its highly aromatic Traminer wines. Having already enjoyed the village's hospitality the evening before, we set off once more through a landscape shaped by vineyards, rolling hills, and volcanic soils. Our destination is Bad Radkersburg, one of the most beautiful historic towns in southeastern Austria and one of the leading thermal spa destinations in the Alpine region. With its well-preserved old town, elegant squares, and renowned thermal spa, it provides a fitting and memorable conclusion to a remarkable long-distance hiking journey.

Pilgrimage can mean a connection to religion for us, or simply a relaxed walk in search of inner peace. In any case, we will savour the quiet moments along the way to Mariazell. Our route is part of long-distance trail 07 and joins another feeder path to the main Mariazell Way near St. Magdalena in Eastern Styria. Coming from our neighbouring country Slovenia, from Maria Bistrica, and crossing Slovenia and Croatia, our starting point this time is Bad Radkersburg.

A Lake Gem in the Ledava ValleyThis hike takes you through the Ledava Valley around Ledavsko jezero, which was built in the early 1970s as a retention basin for flood control. This radically transformed the landscape around Krašči and Ropoča. Today, the lake is not only popular with anglers but is also a Natura 2000 site. The artificial lake serves as an important refuge for birds and fish and is one of the most popular destinations in the transnational Raab-Őrség-Goričko Nature Park. One problem with the lake is that it is becoming increasingly silted up, making it unsuitable for swimming. This leisurely walk follows the “Bernardina pot” nature trail, named after the biologist Bernarda Novak, which provides information about the region’s flora and fauna.

Cross-Border Hiking Delights in Klöch and GerlinciLike a geographical bracket, the “Pot prijateljstva”—“Path of Friendship” in English—links the two wine-growing regions, Styria and Slovenia, together. What was once forcibly separated is now united. The cultural landscape through which this hike winds is just as poetic. There’s plenty to discover between Klöch and Gerlinci: the villages of Pölten and Deutsch Haselbach, the Kutschenitza stream that marks the border, the beautiful countryside, the magnificent panorama, and above all, the delicious cuisine that accompanies you every step of the way. In addition, the Pot prijateljstva is Austria’s first cross-border hiking trail. Here, you’re welcome to spend even more time lingering than is estimated for the hike itself. Cheers! To (cross-border) friendship!
