Your route, to the end of the Camino, is not extremely complicated, the average of its stages is around 24-25 km/day, something very normal on the Jacobean route. If we take a look at its profile in search of big slopes, the most notable is the climb to O Cebreiro, a classic. This climb is somewhat complicated, so much so that, hundreds of years ago in winter times and due to its snowfalls, there was a need to avoid this climb. That is why one of the main routes of the Camino called Winter Route (Camino de Invierno) emerged, which diverted south of Galicia and thus avoided the mentioned climb. Nowadays, even in winter, it is not complicated to make that climb due to all the equipment available and even a much better physical preparation by the pilgrims who make the Camino.

After yesterday’s peace and nature on the Camino, now it’s back to the full experience of cities and urban life. Only the last section runs along vineyards again, though the paths there can get extremely muddy when it rains. Otherwise, we walk along asphalt and sidewalks.> With the Castillo de Ponferrada 01 behind us, we head straight up the path on the right and then down to the left. Crossing the river on the left, we reach a park on the right, through which we walk along the river. The signs generally guide us very well out of the city, and soon the Camino brings us close to the highway. At the top of the hill, we cross the roundabout and walk along an avenue of plane trees. Past the red cross, things quiet down a bit as we pass through the following suburbs. Eventually, we reach the long, narrow town of Columbrianos 02, which we cross along the road. The landscape doesn’t exactly get any more scenic as we make our way to Fuentesnueva 03. The next larger town is Camponaraya 04, which has a supermarket. Here, too, we continue straight ahead along the road toward the highway. Before reaching it, however, we turn left into the park after the roundabout to eventually cross the highway bridge and hike along quieter gravel paths beside striking vineyards. The next town along the way is Cacabelos 05, a beautiful town with a covered rest area at the entrance. The arrows lead us to the church; we pass it on the left and head out of town. We stay to the right of the road, from where the path climbs uphill between two hills. Passing Pieros 06 and nearly at the highest point between the two hills, the Camino turns right into the vineyards, only to lead us left onto the next gravel path. Once again, it becomes quieter, and the route under power lines and along the gravel paths is easy to walk.Once we arrive in Valtuille de Arriba 07, we leave the noise of the roads behind us. The paths that follow lead us further through hilly terrain with some short but quite steep ascents and descents. Since the paths are mostly unpaved and consist of sand, they become very muddy when it rains. On the other hand, there are very beautiful views of the mountain landscapes stretching out before and beside us. On the descent, we reach Villafranca del Bierzo 08, which, due to its location in the valley, we don’t catch sight of until just before we arrive.

Camino frances.  St Jean to Roncesvalles via Orisson with less steep descent alternative via chapel.  Camino Duro from Villafranca (well worth the extra effort!).  Don't just think about it; DO IT !! A fantastic break from pointless life in the UK and wasting your life staring at computers all day.  Ideally continue to Finisterre and/or Muxia.
