An absolute must: the "Divine Gorge" Already in the 18th century, romantics called the gorge of the Río Cares "la Garganta Divina", the "Divine". Those who hike through the canyon embedded in a magnificent mountain landscape will find similarly exuberant names. In an incredible feat of strength from 1915 to 1921, a water channel was carved through 71 tunnels in the rock far above the riverbed to channel the water of the Cares to the power plants near Camarmeña and Arenas de Cabrales. Over 500 workers – men, women, and children – were involved, 11 lost their lives. The route along the maintenance path for the canal, built between 1945–50 and since then almost unchanged, is today one of the most famous hikes in all of Spain. Accordingly, there is much traffic on fine weather days.

An idyllic alpine pasture and a mountain ascent High above Arenas, reachable only via an old connecting path, lie the extensive alpine meadows of the Praderías de Nava. This beautiful patch of earth alone is worth the climb and invites you to enjoy a long picnic at lofty heights. The onward path leads through a fairytale-like labyrinth of rocks and beeches and then descends with a view back to Arenas. For those who want more, they can also climb the 875 m high Cabezo de Juan Robre. Seen from Arenas, it looks like a lying head in profile. Its summit offers a box seat view of the Picos and the valley of the Río Casaño. A long tour with enormous scenic variety!

Great hike to a commanding viewpoint above Arenas. Even if the clouds are down on the Picos, the views of the valley and foothills are spectacular. Way-finding can be a bit tricky after Fuente la Batuva -- keep an eye out for the faded red dots. This guide, and others, talk about "broom" on the route down. They lie - it's actually gorse! And there are added brambles and hawthorn at higher levels. Long trousers are recommended!

The route up to the first peak (Pena L’Alba) is not as indicated by this routing. So don’t turn right where it shows, keep walking up the track until you enter a field and then turn right. Then it is a scramble to the top (so this part of the route is not moderate) but worth it to see the vultures perched along the crags. We couldn’t get to the second peak as the path was ill defined and overgrown but this was in August so is possibly navigable outside the summer months. Otherwise a great walk mostly on gravel roads.

This is a lovely, highly popular route along the line of the river Cares and the canal carved into the mountain. However the profile and timing is incorrect, the return trip is 1,400m of gain and drop, and 5-6 hrs of hiking.

I walk a lot mainly in the UK coastal paths. This is not a challenging walk but extremely enjoyable, scenic and possibly the most enjoyable walk of my lifetime. I walked in October and it was busy. I would not like to walk it in Jul/ August when I assume it is much busier. Not for people who suffer from vertigo!

Thanks for posting. Nice walk to get a first impression of the area. Not a long walk, but the first hour is a continuous ascent, with rocky segments, and the weather can be warm and humid, so it can be exhausting. Wear hiking boots and bring water. The descent track is along the main road, a bit boring, so rather take the gravel paths instead.

Ziegengerippe! Absolut empfehlenswert. Aufstiege möglich (z.B. Canal de Trea).
