Our hike begins in the former spa town of Korytnica, whose history dates back to the 16th century. It became famous for the excellent quality of its mineral water, which won awards at the World’s Fairs of 1873 and 1904. During the Austro-Hungarian Empire, even the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph and Lʼudovít Štúr (a leading figure in the Slovak national movement) were treated at this spa. The facility was privatized in the 1990s and went bankrupt in 2002; since then, it has been left to fall into disrepair. But even today, you can still fill a bottle with the mineral water—which is said to have particularly healing properties—and take it with you—which you should definitely do. After so much history, we hike up an extremely steep slope through unspoiled nature and along rarely traveled trails to the heights of the main ridge of the Low Tatras. From the summit, with its panoramic views, you can see all the way to the Donovaly ski resort and follow the course of the E8 long-distance hiking trail as it comes from Donovaly and continues northeast. Nature helps us reconnect with ourselves on this long hike and find our way back to our inner selves.> In the small village of Korytnica-kúpele01 (822 m), we hike into the valley to a bridge, where we take the path slightly to the left at the fork and head uphill on the paved road. At first, we walk along the left side of a stream. We cross another stream that flows into the one we’re walking along on the left. At this point, we leave the paved road to the left and take a trail. After a few meters, we cross the same stream we crossed earlier once again. At the next fork in the trail, we take the forest path that leads slightly to the left and uphill. There is a trail marker by a beech tree, and after the second marker, we follow a path through a right-hand curve. On the subsequent flat section of the trail, we take the path slightly to the left at the fork. Our path through the forest leads to a forest road; we turn left and reach the Príslop02 trail junction (1,070 m). Here, we take the first right turn into the forest. We ignore the right-hand fork that follows immediately, and at the next fork—which is difficult to spot on this rarely traveled path—we head slightly to the right. The trail is also hard to make out on the next stretch through the forest. Where the forest thins out, a trail becomes visible again. Shortly afterward, we cross the 1,348-meter-high Skorušová. We reach a clear-cut area and have to find our own way through the fallen trees. The trail continues on the right side of the mountain ridge ahead of us. Another clear-cut area is completely impassable. Due to the many fallen trees, we have to go around it slightly below. On a ridge covered with mountain pines, we now head uphill against the direction of the slope. Directly below the summit of Malá Chochulʼa03 (1,719 m), the trail forks; we continue straight ahead toward the highest point of today’s hike. Heading southwest, we descend to the saddle, and after a short climb back up, we reach the rocky summit of Prašivá04 (1,652 m). Beyond the summit, we continue on our original route and descend through mountain pines. A longer descent follows along a well-trodden path. After this path joins a cart track, we reach Hiadelʼské sedlo 05 (1,099 m) near the high-voltage power lines. From here, we head downhill to the right and follow the signposted hiking trail toward Korytnica-kúpele. After a few meters downhill, we turn onto the right-hand forest road at the fork. The next notable point is a solitary house in a clearing. When we reach several houses, the forest road makes a nearly 180° turn. Where the forest trail forks behind a stream, we continue down the left fork.

Donovaly – Útulňa Pod Chabencom - Der Fernwanderweg E8 durch die Niedere Tatra – 1. Etappe
Premium content Difficulty difficult
25.9 km
9:15 h
1,560 m
920 m
Tel.: +421944165853. GPS: 48,931050 19,466840.
