Hiking marathon and pleasure hiking – a contradiction?

Hiking marathon and pleasure hiking – do they go together? We give the answer in advance: Yes, it is possible, but ...
Pleasure hikers take their time. They enjoy nature, flowers, mushrooms, life on deadwood, they take photos and let it all sink in during (longer) breaks. For an enjoyable hike, they need a scenic landscape through valleys and over heights, past rock faces and along streams. They linger at wayside shrines and crossroads and wonder when the magnificent cultural treasures came into being.
Hiking marathon "athletes" don’t have time for that. They cover the distance "against the clock." Like nervous racehorses, they stand at the start waiting for the starter pistol. Some start already in the dark, as the landscape distracts less then. 105 laps around the local sports field also served the purpose.
Yesterday we tested whether the event "hiking marathon" is something for us; we participated in the "Marathon Eifel" around Bruch. Around 500 participants registered, over 300 for the marathon route, about 200 for the half marathon. We started our pleasure hike (half marathon, 23.8 km) only at 9:30 am; by then most walkers were already underway, only occasionally did we feel the hot breath of the pace setters behind us and the breeze as they stormed past. For them and everyone who could not be there, here is our photo report.
The event was excellently planned and carried out by the Eifelverein Wittlich-Land. Half of the route runs from Bruch over the Eifelsteig through the Salm valley and then continues to Hupperath on the Säubrenner route. The way back leads through the natural Bärbach valley.
Route: Bruch – Eifelsteig – Salmtal – Landscheid – Hotel Viktoria (out of service) – Homersbach – Hupperath – Bärbachtal - Bruch
