When you come to Briançon for a walk, you will quickly realise that it was of great strategic importance in the Middle Ages. There are 25 forts on the hillsides of the region and the town itself is home to many historic buildings. Most were built between the 18th and 20th centuries to reinforce the defence system and many were designed by the French military architect S. Bastien Le Prestre de Vauban. These fortifications are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Hike steeped in history for the whole family
The circular walk „Eldorado ! The Croix de Bretagne“ fort is about 11.4 km long and leads along picturesque paths through the forest of Godichonund, past lush meadows and to Le fort de la Croix de Bretagne, built in the late 19th century, which once protected the town of Briançon from possible attacks from Italy. The circuit begins and ends in Villard-St-Pancrace and treats you to wonderful views of the surrounding mountains as you hike. On the descent, the trails lead you to the alpine huts of Pied-Sec and across the Ayes torrent. After the chapel of St Laurence, you descend to the Chemin du Serre.

The variety of landscapes along the trails is simply breathtaking. From Savoie, the route first crosses the Col de la Vallée Etroite near the symbolic Mont Thabor. In the Clarée valley, the route goes öeast of Névache and ücrosses several passes towards the resort of Montgenèvre and on to Briançon, where you can admire the imposing Vauban fortifications. Then the walks ügo over the Col des Ayes into the Queyras Regional Nature Park.
Further on, the walking tours run past the picturesque Chalets de Clapeyto and through the charming village of Brunissard. It goes to the spectacular Fort Queyras and up to the Sommet Buchet. Via the Col Fromage you reach Ceillac. After climbing the summit, you will reach the impressive Lac Miroir and Lac St Anne before crossing Col Girardin and finally descending to Ubaye (Maljasset).
