Surrounded by the peaks of the Dolomites in the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park – above all the majestic Seekofel – you can walk around the famous mountain lake on perfectly marked trails or hike in the surrounding mountains.
Fantastic mountain panoramas, green meadows and quiet forests make for a picture-perfect hiking experience. To round off your hikes, several alpine huts invite you to try the regional specialties.
The 10 most beautiful hikes in Braies
Hiking around the Braies Lake
Perhaps it is the most beautiful mountain lake in the Dolomites: The Braies Lake lies between steep mountain slopes at the very back of the Braies Valley (Italian: Valle di Braies). It is famous above all for its clear, shining turquoise to emerald green water. The lake is strictly protected and the number of visitors is limited. Bus tickets and parking reservations should therefore always be booked in advance, especially in summer.
On the northern shore of the lake is the car park and a nice hotel. The hotel is also the starting point for the easy circular trail around the lake on wide, well-maintained paths suitable for hikers of all levels. If you want, you can extend the hike from the southern shore by another hour with a detour to the Grünwaldalm.

How long is the hike around the Braies Lake?
The hike around the lake is 3.6 km long and usually takes 1 to 1.5 hours.
Can you swim in Lake Braies?
Yes, it is possible to swim in Braies Lake, but it can be quite cold, as the lake remains quite cool even in summer due to its location in the mountains. The average water temperature in summer is around 16-18 degrees Celsius. If you don't want to get wet, you can rent a rowing boat and enjoy the mountain panorama from the water.
Mountain hike to Seekofel
The striking white limestone walls of the Seekofel tower over the Pragser Wildsee lake on its south side. Those who climb to the summit at 2810 m can enjoy a sensational view over the Braies Valley and the mountains of the Dolomites. However, the route to the Seekofel is not for hiking novices, but a demanding mountain hike that requires good physical condition and surefootedness.

Hiking to the most beautiful alpine huts around Braies
The beautiful mountain panoramas of the Braies Dolomites can be enjoyed even better when a stop at a cosy alpine hut awaits you at the end of your hike. Typical South Tyrolean specialities, a cold drink and the view of the surrounding mountain peaks from the terrace make every hike perfect. Around Braies there are several managed huts and shelters that are worth a visit. The best known are the Grünwaldalm, the Dürrensteinhütte and the Rossalm, but there are also many smaller, rustic alpine huts to discover while hiking.
The Dürrensteinhütte (Rifugio Vallandro) lies on the popular Dolomites Alpine Ridgeway and is therefore an important base for many long-distance hikers and mountaineers, but also a day trip destination for families and mountaineers on their way to the Dürrenstein. From the picturesque Hochalm Plätzwiese, which can also be reached by car, it is only a one-hour walk to the Dürrensteinhütte.
