From a stately manor house to a late Romanesque fieldstone church If you liked the Nebel river (Tour 8 »The Nebel Breakthrough Valley«), this small circular route offers another opportunity to get acquainted with the tributary of the Warnow. Although the Nebel valley does not appear quite as wildly romantic here, and the river is only briefly touched twice, you will be on a quiet and seldom-used path. The starting point is a manor house built around 1883 in the Neo-Renaissance style, which, with its turrets, towers like a castle in the associated park. After the listed ensemble was used for a long time as a nursing and care home, it is now a completely normal residential building.

The Garden Campground is located “somewhere in the middle of nowhere.” You can reach it via an access road from the town of Lohmen. Lohmen is located about 6 km north of Dobbertin. > The parking lot at Boat Harbor 01 on the north shore of Lake Garder is not open to the public; you might be better off parking on the road just before the Garden Campground. At the parking lot, an information board provides an overview of the region. We follow the sign for “Lähmnitz Nature Trail – to the Loop Trail” (marked with a “green diagonal bar”). The sandy path is actually a vehicle road, as evidenced by the town sign at the end of the fence. We’ll take the road toward Klein Upahl just a short distance and then turn left, as indicated by the nature trail signs. Note the old milestone at the intersection! We hike on a solid forest road through the woods toward the northwest, then westward, until we reach a signposted X-intersection 02. Here, we follow the sign for “Lähnwitz 0.5 km.” After a short while, we come to another unpaved road at a rest area. An information board marks the start of the Lähnwitz Nature Trail 03. After passing the few houses in Lähnwitz, we learn interesting facts about Lake Lähnwitz as a habitat. At the signposted T-intersection 04, we follow the sign for “Lähnwitz Nature Trail” and turn right. About 100 m further on, we keep to the right again, and then again after 200 m: This is how the Lähnwitz Nature Trail leads us to the Klein Upahl megalithic tomb 05. The passage grave with a dolmen was severely damaged by stone cutters, which is why only a few stones of the enclosure remain. During excavations in the 1970s, the remains of five adults, a toddler, and a newborn were found. The individuals were buried with grave goods: Archaeologists found flint axes and chisels, arrowheads, and clay vessels, as well as remains of meat. From the megalithic tomb, we follow the Lähnwitz nature trail west, northwest, and north. We come across old trees and a boulder known as the Lützow Stone. Grooves in the stone suggest an attempt was made to split it. About 200 meters past the Lützow Stone, we turn left at a green-and-white gate. Just before the little village of Lenzen (see box), the Lähnwitz nature trail leads left to the small Postmoor 06 in the forest. Shortly afterward, we again see traces of stone-splitting on a boulder. Following the nature trail, we turn right twice and reach a wide dirt road, which we follow to the left. We hike southeast for a while and, thanks to an information sign on the left, notice a burial mound. A good 1 km further on, to the left of the main path, stands the stone circle “Lenzener Steintanz” 07. According to archaeological findings, the stones mark the above-ground locations of urn graves. From the stone circle, it’s just a stone’s throw to the “Dröger Kraug” 08. Old trade routes converged at this historic resting place. “Dröger Kraug” is Low German and roughly translates to “dry tavern,” where “Krug” refers to a tavern. Since there was no tavern far and wide, it was likely called “dry.” After a break at “Dröger Kraug,” we follow the nature trail northeast, past Brümmelmoor, to the signposted T-intersection 04, which we’re already familiar with. We head back to the start of the Lähnwitz Nature Trail 03 and continue to the signposted X-intersection 02. Here, we turn left, following the sign that reads “Hollensee 2.2 km / Klein Upahl 2.1 km.” We keep walking until the distance to the edge of the forest on the left narrows, and ignore the first forest road branching off to the right. We follow the second wide forest road 09, which branches off to the right, heading east (Tip: There’s a bike path sign just before the fork). After about 500 m, a trail on the left leads up to the Jasenberg. This trail begins across from a clearing. However, we continue straight ahead to the edge of the forest and head uphill to the left. At the next corner of the forest, we see the wooden observation tower on the Jasenberg 10 on our left. Although it is low, it offers a wonderful view of Lake Großupahl and beyond. From the tower, we head back along the familiar path and then continue downhill, following the sign for “Garden 2.5 km.” We come to a wide forest road and turn right onto it. After about 600 m, we reach the signposted intersection north of the Garden campground, where we started out. We follow the familiar path to the town sign and back to the parking lot at Boat Harbor 01.
