Siggjo, the highest mountain on the island of Bømlo, is not only a fabulous vantage point but has also been, “since time immemorial,” an important landmark guiding ships into the Bomlafjord, the entrance to the Hardangerfjord. In addition, Siggjo was used as a “weather prophet,” because when it “wore a hat,” it meant rain was coming. The hike to the summit is a delight; it is quite steep in places and, in the upper section, follows a beautiful stone staircase that was “meticulously crafted” by Nepalese Sherpas in the fall of 2021. In good weather, large parts of Sunnhordland can be seen from the summit, and the view stretches from the vast North Sea to the Folgefonna Glacier, sweeping across the phenomenal fjord and archipelago landscape off the island of Bømlo.> From the 01 Siggjoparking lot, we walk past the information signs for the Siggjo ascent—which include details about the renovation of the upper section of the trail in the fall of 2021—and turn right onto the wide gravel path leading uphill. At first, the trail alternates between steep and flatter sections through the forest and, after about 1 km, reaches the 02junction marked with a wooden arrow leading to the Siggjo ascent. Here, on the right-hand side, begins the beautiful stone staircase trail. It was built to a high standard by four Nepalese sherpas. The steps climb steeply right from the start and soon offer magnificent views of the fjord landscape, which lies far below. In some places, you can also take a detour onto the rocky sections of the old trail, which are accessibly connected by bridges and rope handrails, making the ascent very entertaining. The new stone staircase also offers plenty of variety, as it features beautiful wooden walkways and bridges with chain handrails. The exertion of the fairly steep climb is now becoming increasingly noticeable. After a climb of just under 400 hm, you’ve finally made it and reached the 03Siggjo summit, marked by a transmission tower. The rather strenuous climb is well worth every drop of sweat, however, as the view of the endless North Sea and the fantastic fjord and skerry landscape in the outer Hardangerfjord is breathtaking. On clear days, the view from Siggjo extends all the way to the snow-capped peaks of Hardangervidda and Hallingskarvet. During the Neolithic period, from approximately 4000 to 2000 B.C., rhyolite was quarried at Siggjo; it was used for arrowheads and cutting tools and was distributed along trade routes to the Oslofjord and as far as central Norway.Starting at the transmission tower, you can take a beautiful clockwise loop hike across the summit plateau, which leads past the small summit lake to all three peaks. The individual vantage points offer completely different yet consistently impressive views, allowing you to fully savor the beauty of the landscape. The return trip follows the same route up the stone steps back to the starting point at the 01 Siggjoparking lot.

Siggjo—Lighthouse Keeper and Weather Prophet over the North Sea

The Siggjo on the island of Bømlo has served since the Middle Ages as a navigational marker for the entrance from the North Sea into the Bømlafjord, the outermost part of the Hardangerfjord. Folklore immortalizes it as a weather prophet that is sometimes said to wear a cloak of clouds, and King Olav the Holy is said to have hidden a golden shrine in the greenish-shimmering volcanic rock—a treasure that no one has yet found. The challenging hike to the summit is popular; from the top, there’s a fantastic view of the outer Hardangerfjord, the archipelago in the North Sea, and all the way to the mountains of the Hanseatic city of Bergen.▶ Two routes lead up to Siggjo: the more challenging one from the west and the family-friendly one from the east. The eastern route has the advantage that exposed sections are secured with bridge planks and railings. At the signposted Siggjo parking lot 01, the eastern ascent to Siggjo begins—the dominant mountain range on the island of Bømlo at the entrance to the Bømlafjord. If you have trouble finding parking on busy weekends, there’s a second parking lot a two-minute walk further south. From the parking lot, the trail leads uphill through the forest and immediately joins the farm road—closed to public traffic—that begins at the second parking lot. The trail climbs gently through the forest; the ascent only becomes steep after trail junction 02. At first, the trail winds through the forest, which is increasingly interspersed with rocky outcrops, and when the continuous forest ends at about 300 m above sea level, the scenic section of the hike begins. However, the rocky terrain now features several ascents, with sections of the trail secured in places. The Siggjo summit 03, crowned by a telecommunications tower, offers a panoramic view of the 1,000 islands of the municipality of Bømlo; in the far south, the island of Utsira can be seen in the North Sea, to the north, the Lyderhorn—one of the seven mountains of Bergen—is visible; to the east, the Folgefonna plateau glacier glistens white; and to the south lies the city of Haugesund off the coast of the island of Karmøya. The summit logbook is kept in the Telewerk hut next to the transmission tower. Since Siggjo is composed of the volcanic rock rhyolite, the lake at the summit is often mistaken for a former crater lake. Although Siggjo is composed of volcanic rock similar to granite but distinctly greener in color, it was never itself an active volcanic cone. During the Neolithic period, from 4000 to 2000 B.C., Siggjo rhyolite was quarried using fire and water and fashioned into arrowheads and cutting tools. Tools made of Siggjo rhyolite were traded along Stone Age trade routes as far as Central Norway and the Oslo Fjord. From the summit, the route follows the same path back to starting point 01.
