Hike to the top of Southern Helgeland’s highest mountain

On a well-marked route to the viewpoint mountain Holmsvanet

The 650-kilometer-long Norwegian National Road RV17, also known as “Kystriksveien,” runs from Steinkjer in the Trøndelag region in the south to Bodø in the Nordland region in the north. It is considered one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world and offers views of fjords, islands, glaciers, and mountains such as the Heilhornet. The latter rises from the surrounding coastal landscape like a giant horn or a sharply pointed peak and can be seen from a great distance. With an elevation gain of 950 meters and a route length of 10.7 km, the ascent is very challenging. Strong westerly winds frequently blow on the mountain, turning the crossing of the summit ridge into a true tightrope walk. From the summit, you’re treated to a fascinating 360-degree panoramic view: to the west, the view sweeps across the Nordhorsfjorden to the geologically interesting island of Leka and far out onto the European North Sea. To the north, you can see the small neighboring mountain Litlhornet and the coast of Northern Norway beyond it. On a clear day, you can even make out the mountains in Sweden to the east. To the south, you look down on the Sørfjorden and the peaks beyond it.> We leave the parking lot, which is located directly next to the RV17, heading north. After crossing the stream, the trail begins on the right and climbs steeply right away. Only after passing a small hill does the terrain level out, and the trail descends into a valley. We ignore the trail branching off to the left toward Litlhornet. Then the trail climbs again to a small 02 lake. After that, the route turns right, and the trail leads over smooth, flat rocks, past numerous colored markings and cairns, to the Heilhornet ridge extending westward, which we cross. The trail gradually turns eastward, and we now hike at the foot of the towering rock face of the summit plateau. Amid constant ups and downs, we cross the so-called 03 Hornfjellet. Then the trail turns and leads up the 04southeast flank. We zigzag around large boulders. Occasionally, we have to use our hands for support. Once we reach the ridge, we ignore the signpost pointing to the right and continue to the left. The summit is already in sight, but before reaching it, you must descend a short distance. This is followed by a rope-secured path across a very narrow ridge, which requires sure-footedness and a head for heights. After a few meters of easy boulder climbing, you reach the summit plateau, and it’s only a few more meters to the huge pile of rocks at 05Heilhornet. The return trip follows the same route back to the parking lot at 01RV17.

Very nice hike, with some steeper sections that are manageable. The reward is the view from the island of Leka to the island archipelago in front of Bindalsfjord.

Bis zum Gundagammen waren es 3,5 km und 320 Höhenmeter. Bis zum Heilhornet sind es noch einmal 3 km, aber noch ca. 700 Hm. Da wir die Tour zum Gipfel 2017 schon gemacht haben, haben wir dieses Jahr darauf verzichtet.
