A nice small circular hike from the parking lot at the B257 (Ulmen towards Kelberg) to the Schönbach summit cross. Attention: At the summit cross there is a goat pen, which means free-roaming goats are there. Probably in spring/summer, exact timing is unknown. We were there on 10.04.2022, they were not there yet. Dogs that leave the goats alone can be taken in on a leash. Those that constantly bark at or try to attack them cannot! Please be considerate of the goats, do not feed them, and take your trash (including cigarette butts!) with you. There is a trash bin in front of the goat pen.

▶ From the starting point inUlmen01, follow the “black triangle” trail markers: head toward Daun along the country road until you pass the end of town. At the left-hand curve (just before the bridge over the B 257), turn right and head downhill; at the lower edge of the forest, turn right next to the B 257 into the valley, where you’ll cross under theUeßbach02 and the B 257. After that, head uphill and do not take the first dirt road to the right; instead, continue to the next paved road branching off to the right. Now follow this road uphill. Before the water tank, turn left onto Trail 1 and continue straight (!) uphill, with a view of the lava quarry atthe Kreuzberg volcano03. Walk around the west side of the lava dome—do not climb up to the quarry site on the right. Behind the mountain, head through the forest to B 257. Stay next to the federal highway for another 50 m, then cross it and head down the straight dirt road, with a view across the Ueß Valley toward the Kastelberg volcano. At the pine trees, turn right and continue downhill, cross the railroad tracks, and head towardBerenbach04. At the end of “Lange Wiesen” street, cross the Ueß, turn right past the little fountain, and continue to the town limit sign. There, turn onto Trail 5, heading uphill. This steadily ascending forest road turns left after 20 minutes, just before a wildflower meadow. From the next turning area with a trail junction, continue uphill to the right until you reach the transversingVulkanweg 05 (marked “V”) on the ridge at Jakobsberg. Turn right onto this trail. Take the next cross-path to the right, heading downhill; after 600 m, continue downhill from a fork to the left. Climb slightly again after passing the power lines, but turn right at the yellow natural gas pipeline signs and head downhill again for another 600 m through the Weyerbusch. At a fork, turn left, head east around theJungferweiher06 nature reserve, and finally cross the railroad tracks to return to the starting point.
