Vilalba – Baamonde – A mix of dirt roads and paved roads

We now have a stage ahead of us where enjoyment depends heavily on the weather. However, the worst sections can be bypassed by taking the N-634 (see note in the text). Since the stage is quite short, it can be extended in both summer and winter to the hostel in A Lagoa (12 km from Baamonde)—be sure to check (or have someone check) availability beforehand. Shopping options are available in Baamonde.▶ From the market square in Vilalba 01, we walk straight ahead to the right of the church and, at the next fork, briefly turn left, then turn right downhill at the “Pension Suites Camiño Norte.” We cross the intersection and hike along a back road to the next street, continuing to the edge of town. The short stretch of paved road that follows ends at the water treatment plant. We cross the river (fountain), walk slightly uphill along the road through the village, and finally pass under the highway. Crossing the Ponte Rodriguez, we turn right immediately and walk past idyllically situated houses. We continue uphill through a sunken path and another very small village until we reach the pastures with a panoramic view of Vilalba, where we turn right onto a less scenic path. This path quickly takes us to Gabín 02. On the village road, we pass the small orchard and, at the next street (house with green doors and shutters), turn left onto a forest trail. Using stepping stones across the ford, the Camino now winds through the hilly—but finally eucalyptus-free—mixed forest. We pass As Turbelas, hear the noise of the highway, and cross it. Past the first house on the right, we continue straight ahead to reach the N-634, as well as the striking church and cemetery of Alba 03. After a short stretch along the national highway, we reach the parallel path to the right of the road—one best avoided when it’s raining. Instead, we can carefully follow the national highway for a good 2.3 km until we can turn left. Otherwise, we walk along farm roads and through small villages until we cross the national highway again. Continuing along the edge of the forest, we reach a large farmyard where we turn right and rejoin the national highway (Bar). Continuing straight ahead, we pass under the highway, turn left over the bridge across the Río Labrado, walk through the small village of Ponte de Sa, and pass through the highway tunnel once more. After a short stretch along the national highway, we cross it again to take the final unpaved paths of this stage. From the village of Lamela onward, the Camino runs almost exclusively along small, quiet village and country roads. Here, we enjoy the temporary peace and seclusion of villages such as Penas, Casanovas, and Casamuniño for about 5 km. We then pass under the highway one last time and walk along its left side, reaching the national highway on the left at the Tanatorio building, which we follow all the way to the public hostel in Baamonde 04, 100 meters before the roundabout.
