Over the Pic de Bacanère into the Garonne ValleyOn today’s route into the Garonne Valley, we’ll have to climb the Pic de Bacanère. At 2,193 m, it’s quite a challenge standing in our way. However, the ascent to the Cabane de Saunères is quite leisurely. From there, we enter open pastureland—strewn with flowers in the summer—that captivates with a magnificent view of the surrounding rocky peaks all the way to the Maladeta Massif. Only the faint trail, which requires full attention to the markings, detracts slightly from the overall experience. Upon arriving in Fos, a queasy feeling sets in as we take in the deserted houses and streets. The exodus to larger cities is clearly evident here. This makes us all the more pleased to find the small grocery store, which has since reopened. Here, we can stock up on essential supplies one last time before entering the utter solitude of the Ariège.
