Challenging tour above Lago BaccioAlps or Apennines? Monte Rondinaio will certainly satisfy even seasoned alpinists - with lonely scree cirques, dark rockfalls and an elegantly curved connecting ridge to the neighboring Monte Giovo. Its "key section" is secured with a steel cable, but pushes the body 350 meters above Lago Baccio into the air.

The Wild Side of a Great MountainFrom the Serchio valley, viewed approximately from Barga, Monte Giovo appears as a broad, gently curved grassy ridge, densely forested up to high altitudes and striped with oblique layers of rock. Different from the north, from Emilia-Romagna: Here it boasts its dark northeast face above the enchanting, almost 6-hectare large Lago Santo Modenese, which owes its existence – like all spring-fed lakes in the Apennines – to glacial ice ages.

»Beginner's hike« above the middle Serchio ValleyHigh above the middle Serchio Valley sits the medievally intricate small town of Barga. It appears richer and more Tuscan than the other towns of the Garfagnana because it allied with Florence in the 14th century and thus benefited from the cultural and monetary prosperity of the Medici. A visit to the Romanesque Cathedral of San Cristoforo is a must – among other things, it houses a magnificent marble pulpit. Those who want to get to know the surroundings of this popular excursion destination better can set out from Barga to the quiet mountain villages of Catagnana and Sommavilla, which offer a dreamily beautiful view of the Apuan Alps.
