Like most of my routes, I also freely compiled this one and was positively surprised at the destination. A pilgrimage church, a lookout tower, a chapel on varied types of paths await those seeking activity and relaxation. A long section runs along the former Iron Curtain on the Czech side.

Own route from Ceska Kubice station to Cheb station. Extremely tough route for masochists and self-suppliers. Kilometers of paths through the forest and a deserted area. For many kilometers no opportunity to refresh supplies. Official overnight accommodations absent. We took four days, had a lot of fun, but also lonely phases. A legendary ruin and panoramic view from the former military tower The Schellenberg castle ruins, a former Lobkowitz hunting lodge, rise to a height of 826 m. You cross a bridge to climb the wooden observation tower, which was built on top of the ruins. On a sunny day, the view from here is fantastic. The many legends surrounding Schellenberg, however, likely originated more in the midst of night and fog; it is said that the “Schellenbergmannl” roams here on dark nights. Today, a wooden “mannl” with a friendly smile guards the castle ruins. A short while later, we come upon the “Schauertanne” (Trembling Fir), whose needles still tremble with horror today because a knight is said to have killed his own brother out of jealousy at its base long ago. Then we head up to the summit of the Havran (Rabenberg). There, a lookout tower awaits us, offering a spectacular view stretching all the way to the Alps.

Over the Borderland Tower on Border Paths to Hermansreuth In the middle of the last century, up to 70 manufacturers in Bärnau made fine mother-of-pearl buttons. Today, the only remaining manufacturer mainly produces plastic and metal buttons. Our hike takes us from the Steinberg Church on the outskirts along the »Golden Road« hiking trail, once an important trade route between Nuremberg and Prague, to the picturesque Borderland Tower. Here, there is a magnificent view of the Tachau region in neighboring Czech Republic. Via a scenic border path, we reach Hermannsreuth, whose directly adjacent neighboring village Hermannsreith was completely destroyed after World War II.
