Historical Hiking Destinations along the GollachA hike not only for history enthusiasts: here the landscape changes from forest to riverbank and sun-exposed slopes. On the tour from the small town of Aub on the Gollach, we explore the ruins of Reichelsburg Castle and the beautifully situated Chapel of Saint Kunigundis. If you like, you can also visit the Fire Department Museum in Waldmannshofen. The historical points of interest, the pleasant course of the Gollach with its meadow paths, and the old forest path of Holzleite make this hike a true top tour that can always be reshaped with variations. The small town of Aub is a real discovery: there is a very attractive, complete and quaint ensemble of buildings around the marketplace, including a late Gothic town hall, a market fountain, a baroque Marian column, and a historic pharmacy. The Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary houses a crucifixion group from the gifted hands of woodcarver Tilman Riemenschneider from 1515. Nearby stands the Renaissance castle of the Würzburg prince-bishops – a representative building that would suit much larger towns as well. Those interested in health in the Middle Ages can learn about it in the hospital museum – there's much to see in this small town with a rich past.

Experience history along the GollachBieberehren is the ideal starting point for an extremely eventful and historically rich tour along the Gollach. Here, the small river originating at the southwestern edge of the Steigerwald flows into the Tauber after 34 km. The small town boasts three churches, including the Käppele on the Kreuzberg, which we, of course, hike up to. Then it goes onto the Gäu plateau to the quaint farming village of Buch and from there down into the Gollach valley. The Kunigunden Chapel located north of the river on the Alten Berg is our next intermediate destination and one of the highlights of our tour. The late Romanesque little church (probably built between 1232 and 1240) is dedicated to Saint Kunigunde (around 980–1033), around whom numerous legends revolve. She was the spouse of Emperor Henry II. The childless couple chose Christ as their heir and founded the Diocese of Bamberg. Both found their final resting place in the Bamberg Cathedral. Further upstream invites the ruin of Reichelsburg for a visit. The fortress, first documented in 1230, had not been inhabited since around 1750 and gradually fell into decay. The small town of Aub marks the turning point for the return journey over the Gäu plateau back to Bieberehren. However, one should take enough time before to explore the town more closely. The picturesque market square, the parish church of the Assumption of Mary (with a crucifixion group by Riemenschneider), as well as the Renaissance castle of the Würzburg prince-bishops are definitely worth seeing.

I'm not much of a hiker, but I'd like to complete the 1,000 km challenge on Outdooractive in 2023 (so far I've only ever managed around 500 km a year). I want to hike a total distance of 1,100 km, which is approximately from my hometown of Weiler to Cuxhafen. The idea is to slim down massively in the process. That would be my dream project for 2023.
