On the St. Wenceslaus TrailIn addition to the hike described in Tour 15 along the Weilach and around the western district, the Aresing hiking trail network also offers an interesting route on the east side: the St. Wenceslaus Trail from Aresing to Oberlauterbach, which is best supplemented right at the start by the beautiful route along the Weilach. The program includes well-walkable field paths in a hilly environment and a visit to Oberlauterbach, a village that can rightly be called curious due to its dazzling architectural diversity combined with a touch of world remoteness.

On quiet paths through a Bavarian picture-book landscapeThis impressive, long-distance hike connects Schrobenhausen and Pfaffenhofen just like Tour 26 – but in the opposite direction and with a completely different route. It thus links the Paar valley and the Ilm valley. So, we walk from one town to the other and enjoy walking through idyllic and quiet areas, through forests and across fields, apart from a few unavoidable stretches of asphalt. A great undertaking that features a very special highlight near the end of the tour with the impressive Scheyern monastery. Those who need to return from Pfaffenhofen to Schrobenhausen can easily do so by train in less than an hour via Ingolstadt or by taxi or hitchhiking on the direct connecting road.
Schrobenhausen / From Karlsbader Straße, 438 m, in the south of Schrobenhausen, we start at the junction of Hafnerweg and take the gravel path opposite. Continue immediately to the right on a sandy, gravelly field path, which meanders gently through the predominantly arable landscape with a wide view over the Paartal valley. At a field cross we reach the district road, which we follow briefly to the left. © Bergverlag Rother GmbH

Through the agricultural fields to the pilgrimage church The Maria Beinberg pilgrimage church rises on a free-standing hill, where people left their mark in prehistoric times and a fortress and castle stood in the Middle Ages. The first chapel was built in the 15th century and the new building of the present church was completed in 1497. The first document of Marian devotion dates back to 1597, and miracles are said to have been performed on the sick in particular. The pilgrimage reached its peak in the 18th century, as evidenced by the magnificent interior decoration with the miraculous image (Mary with the Christ Child) in the high altar. A benefactor's house was built for a priest, who was appointed to provide spiritual care for the pilgrims, and the sacristan, who also taught the children of the surrounding villages here from the beginning of the 16th century until 1802. Even today, pilgrims still come here every day and its popularity is even increasing.

On the "Johann B. Hofner" hiking trail and along the WeilachThe hiking trails marked out by the municipality of Aresing invite you to explore the lower Weilach valley. Not all of them are equally rewarding, and you don't have to follow every hiking trail exactly as signposted. However, if you combine the most beautiful routes with each other, you will find excellent hiking routes that can be recommended without reservation. One of them circles the western part of the village and runs for long stretches directly along the Weilach, which hikers will appreciate given the rarity of beautiful footpaths along smaller rivers.

From Peutenhausen to Gachenbach—To a pilgrimage church in the Weilach Valley

The Maria Beinberg pilgrimage site is situated on a hill in the Weilach Valley, south of Peutenhausen. The origins of the pilgrimage church are largely unknown. As with most pilgrimage sites, legends abound here as well: they say that the district administrator Bernhard Peuscher had a chapel built out of devout gratitude for surviving the years of the plague. Evidence from the first half of the 16th century includes, in addition to the miraculous image, a large bell, a crucifixion group, and a depiction of the Death of the Virgin. > From the parking lot in Peutenhausen 01, we first walk north along the main street, past the church. After ten minutes, we turn right onto “In der Hut,” passing a few houses on our way to the first fields. Here we keep to the left onto a sandy path through fields and meadows. At the paved road, we turn right, then pass under the B300. Immediately afterward, we turn right and then left onto a gravel path. We walk along the edge of the forest to a intersection with hunting blind 02. Here, we turn right onto a path that leads us gently up into the forest. Shortly afterward, the path descends again. We stay on the main path, ignore all side paths, and then follow a barely discernible trail that’s overgrown with stinging nettles in the middle. Gradually, the weeds on the path thin out, and we can already see the fields shimmering through the trees. About 100 meters before exiting the forest, we take a sharp left onto a forest path. It leads us uphill for a short distance while keeping to the left, then takes us through a grassy hollow. The route curves to the left and takes us past a dilapidated hunting blind. We maintain our direction and hike steadily straight ahead down the increasingly visible path. We walk through the forest like this for a few minutes, then come upon a wide forest trail and a brick wayside shrine 03. The forest trail comes up from the left. We follow it to the right. The wide forest path leads us gently downhill. After about ten minutes, we pass a wayside shrine; shortly afterward, at the last opportunity before the edge of the forest, we turn diagonally right onto a narrow forest path. We follow it straight ahead to the edge of the forest and continue along a grassy path until we reach a paved path. Eventually, we come to a small road. We cross it and climb the stairs up to the Maria Beinberg pilgrimage church 04. South of the church is a Lourdes grotto. After visiting the pilgrimage church, we head back down the stairs on the other side. A meadow path leads us to a small road that joins Kapellenweg. At the end of this road, we turn right onto Sebastianstraße, then turn left at the community center toward the Maypole. Before crossing the village road straight ahead, we can take a short detour to the right—just a few steps—to the Gasthof Neumayr 05. This traditional restaurant is an excellent spot for a lunch break. We continue through the village to the wayside shrine, where we turn diagonally right and walk to the edge of town. Here stands another wayside shrine, where we turn right onto a paved road. At the end of it, a wayside cross awaits us at an intersection. We keep going straight ahead, hiking along a gravel path and, a few minutes later, a meadow path that soon takes us past a small grove. Finally, we come to a small paved road. We turn right. Be careful afterward when crossing the country road diagonally to the left! Here, a narrow road leads us onward. A quarter of an hour later, we pass a large field cross (No . 06), then we go under the state highway. Immediately afterward, we cross a road and continue straight ahead onto a gravel path, passing by fields. At a small grove, the gravel path leads us around to the left, and just a few minutes later, we follow it around a right-hand curve. Here, the path becomes coarser and leads us downhill along the fields. At the intersection at the bottom, we leave the paved path and continue straight ahead onto a meadow path, soon heading downhill again alongside the fields. At the next intersection with birch and beech trees 07, we continue straight ahead. Then our dirt road ends at a small paved road, which we follow to the right. At the next fork, we keep to the left, then follow the dirt path gently uphill. At the crossroads, we turn left again until we reach the country road to Westerham 08. We now follow it for a quarter of an hour along the strip of meadow next to the road to Westerham. In the village, we keep to the left, then turn right and stroll the last hundred meters back to the parking lot in Peutenhausen 01.

Today we’ll hike up and down through the hilly landscape of Aresing to Oberlauterbach and the imposing St. Wenzeslaus Church. Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy magnificent panoramic views and take a break. The final stretch follows the idyllic course of the Weilach River. Here, you can even dip your tired feet into the refreshing little stream. > We start in Aresing 01 at City Hall. Diagonally across from St. Martin’s, we turn onto Bischof-Sailer-Straße. It takes us straight ahead, directly along the pedestrian and bike path past the kindergarten onto Eichenstraße. Its continuation leads us straight past the sports field 02. It joins a wide, paved path, which we follow for quite a while until it curves to the right. Here we turn left onto a gravel path toward Hengthal 03. We hike slightly uphill, past the farmsteads, and from here follow a freshly paved little road uphill. It soon takes us over the hill, past a wayside shrine, to another road. Across the street to the left, a small chapel stands by the roadside. We follow the little road straight down to Oberlauterbach. At the main road, we turn right. We stroll through the village and up Pfarrstraße to St. Wenzeslaus Church 04. Following a few trails through a small wood, we head back down to the main road, which we now follow in the opposite direction. At the bus stop near the ring road, we turn left—please note that there are unfortunately no hiking signs here. We quickly leave the village behind, steadfastly maintaining our direction, and climb gently uphill along grass-covered dirt paths. Finally, after 500 meters, we come to a crossroads (the hiking sign here is hidden behind dense foliage in the summer). We turn right onto the well-maintained dirt road. A small road that follows leads us briefly to the left. At the next opportunity, we turn right again onto another dirt road. We hike to the next cross-path, then the route requires a left-right turn. The trail gently climbs northward again to an information board and a beautifully situated viewpoint bench 05. A small bench next to it invites you to take a royal break. Next, the trail curves to the left, then winds along fields for a good quarter of an hour until it ends at a cross-path. We follow it to the right, but turn left again at the next opportunity and reach a bridge 06 that takes us across the Weilach. Immediately afterward, the trail signs direct us south along a very scenic path beside the Weilach. After a good kilometer, the trees and bushes thin out on our left, allowing us to descend directly to the riverbank and a gravel bank 07. Here is a great opportunity to cool off a bit in the Weilach and perhaps even take a short Kneipp break. Then we stroll along the Weilach for a few more minutes until we come to the first houses of Aresing 01 and a road. We turn right, but just 100 meters later we turn left again and follow Kirchweg over a bridge and then immediately right back to St. Martin’s Church.
