Through the Roman and medieval Augusta Praetoria For more than a hundred years, the Romans tried to conquer the Aosta Valley and Cornelia, the legendary capital of the Salassi, which lay here at the confluence of the Buthier and Dora Baltea rivers; in the year 143 BC alone, 10,000 Romans are said to have fallen in one of these battles. When the conquest was successful, the population was enslaved and deported, their city was razed to the ground; on the ruins arose the Roman Aosta with fortress walls, triumphal arches, two theaters – the "Rome of the Alps"! Once again, in the High Middle Ages, the city and valley gained fame through the "Carta delle Franchigie", with which the Counts of Savoy granted democracy and independence to the population in 1191. Today, Aosta is the capital of Italy's smallest region, politically and linguistically recognized as an "Autonomous Region".

Rather do it the other way round: descent will be easier and w better shade. Portion through watered fields (free shower!)
